Swelling and itching of the finger joints?

Hello doctor, I suddenly felt an itch in my fingers while sleeping at night, which spread to my whole hand.
When I got up to check, I found that the joint of my left index finger was swollen, resembling a tempura.
I was scared and thought I had been bitten by an insect, so I quickly applied some medication.
After a while, it gradually subsided and stopped itching.
I would like to ask what this situation might be.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello: Based solely on the textual description, it is not possible to accurately diagnose a skin condition.
Symptoms that appear and disappear quickly within a day may resemble urticaria.
If the skin symptoms do not improve or worsen, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you!

Sudden finger joint swelling and itching can be concerning, especially when it occurs unexpectedly during the night. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for these symptoms, and understanding them can help you determine the best course of action.

One possible explanation for the sudden swelling and itching in your finger joint could be an allergic reaction. Allergies can manifest in various ways, including localized swelling and itching, often in response to insect bites, contact with irritants, or even certain foods. If you were exposed to something new or different before going to bed, it might have triggered this reaction. The fact that the swelling subsided and the itching resolved after a while supports this possibility.

Another potential cause could be a form of inflammatory arthritis, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis. Gout, in particular, is characterized by sudden and severe pain, swelling, and redness in the joints, often affecting the big toe but can also involve other joints, including the fingers. If you have a history of joint issues or if you consume a diet high in purines (found in red meat, shellfish, and alcohol), this could be a consideration. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is an autoimmune condition that can cause joint swelling and pain, typically affecting multiple joints symmetrically.

Infections are another possibility. A localized infection in the joint or surrounding tissues can lead to swelling, redness, and pain. If you notice any warmth, increased redness, or if the swelling persists or worsens, it would be wise to seek medical attention, as infections may require antibiotics or other treatments.

Additionally, conditions like tendinitis or tenosynovitis, which involve inflammation of the tendons or the sheath surrounding the tendons, can also cause localized swelling and discomfort. These conditions are often related to repetitive use or strain on the affected joint.

Given that your symptoms resolved on their own, it may not be an urgent issue, but it is essential to monitor for any recurrence or worsening of symptoms. If you experience additional episodes of swelling, persistent pain, or any other concerning symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend diagnostic tests, such as blood tests or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In summary, while the sudden swelling and itching in your finger joint could be due to an allergic reaction, inflammatory arthritis, infection, or tendon-related issues, the self-resolving nature of your symptoms suggests a less severe cause. However, keeping an eye on your symptoms and seeking medical advice if they recur or worsen is advisable to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
