Post-operative issues after circumcision?

Hello Dr.
Du,
I am Fong Da.
I underwent a circumcision on November 7th, and it has been 25 days since the procedure.
The swelling on the upper part has completely subsided, while the lower part has reduced but not entirely.
I asked my doctor if this is normal, and he said it is.
Generally, it takes about 3 to 4 weeks for swelling to subside, but it varies depending on the individual's healing ability.
Some people recover quickly, while others may still have swelling after three months.
I mainly want to ask Dr.
Du if the remaining half-circle of swelling on the lower part is a normal phenomenon.
Additionally, what can I do to effectively expedite the complete resolution of the swelling? Thank you!

Feng Da, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/12/02

Hello: It is normal for swelling to gradually decrease.
There is no specific method; it will resolve over time.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision swelling and recovery can be a source of concern for many patients. It’s important to understand that some degree of swelling is a normal part of the healing process after circumcision. The body’s response to surgery often includes inflammation, which can manifest as swelling in the surgical area.
In your case, it has been 25 days since the procedure, and while the swelling at the top has completely resolved, you still notice some residual swelling at the bottom. This is not uncommon. Typically, swelling can take anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks to subside, but individual healing times can vary significantly based on several factors, including your overall health, age, and the extent of the surgery. Some individuals may experience swelling that lasts for several months, while others may see a quicker resolution.

The fact that your doctor has reassured you that this is normal is a good sign. It indicates that your healing process is within the expected range. However, if you notice that the swelling is not improving or if it worsens, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether the swelling is part of the normal healing process or if there might be an underlying issue, such as infection or fluid accumulation.

To help reduce swelling and promote healing, here are some general recommendations:
1. Rest: Ensure you are giving your body enough time to heal. Avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate swelling.

2. Ice Application: Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the swollen area can help reduce inflammation. Make sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin, which can cause frostbite. Apply it for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

3. Elevation: Keeping the area elevated can help reduce swelling. When resting, try to keep your lower body elevated above the level of your heart.

4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help your body heal more efficiently. Drink plenty of fluids, as this can assist in reducing swelling.

5. Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Adhere to any specific post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon. This may include recommendations on bathing, dressing changes, and activity restrictions.

6. Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge from the surgical site, as well as fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

7. Consult Your Doctor: If you have concerns about the swelling or if it persists beyond what is considered normal, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for further evaluation.

In summary, some residual swelling after circumcision is generally normal, and healing times can vary widely among individuals. By following the recommended care practices and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider, you can help ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor for personalized advice.
