There is a growth on the tongue?

Yesterday, I noticed a white, elongated growth on the edge of my tongue.
It is less than one centimeter long and causes slight pain when touched.

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, since I cannot see the actual condition, I can only speculate that it might be a mild ulcer on the tongue, usually caused by biting or a viral infection.
It should gradually improve over the next few days.
If it persists and does not resolve, please visit a dental clinic for further evaluation.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Painful white growths on the tongue can be concerning, and understanding their potential causes and treatments is essential for effective management. The appearance of a white, elongated growth on the tongue, especially if it is painful, could be attributed to several factors.

One common cause of white lesions on the tongue is oral thrush, which is a fungal infection caused by the overgrowth of Candida yeast. This condition often presents as white patches that can be painful and may bleed when scraped. Oral thrush is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems, those taking antibiotics, or individuals with diabetes.

Another possibility is geographic tongue, a benign condition characterized by irregular, smooth, red patches on the tongue with white borders. While it is generally painless, some individuals may experience discomfort or sensitivity, particularly when consuming spicy or acidic foods.

Leukoplakia is another condition that could present as white patches on the tongue. It is often associated with irritation from tobacco use, alcohol consumption, or chronic friction from dental appliances. While leukoplakia itself is usually painless, it can sometimes indicate precancerous changes, so monitoring and evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial.

Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can cause white, lacy patches or painful sores in the mouth, including the tongue. This condition is often associated with stress and can be exacerbated by certain medications.

If the growth is painful and persistent, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider or dentist for a thorough examination. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, a biopsy to rule out more serious conditions, including oral cancer.

In terms of treatment, the approach will depend on the underlying cause. For oral thrush, antifungal medications such as nystatin or fluconazole may be prescribed. If the lesion is due to irritation or leukoplakia, addressing the irritant (e.g., quitting smoking or adjusting dental appliances) may help resolve the issue. For conditions like oral lichen planus, corticosteroids may be used to reduce inflammation and pain.

In the meantime, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial. Rinsing with warm salt water can help soothe irritation, and avoiding spicy or acidic foods may reduce discomfort. Staying hydrated and using a soft-bristled toothbrush can also minimize irritation.

In summary, while a painful white growth on the tongue can arise from various causes, including oral thrush, geographic tongue, leukoplakia, or oral lichen planus, it is essential to seek professional evaluation for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help alleviate symptoms and prevent potential complications.
