The sides of the tongue are white and painful?
Hello Doctor, recently I have noticed that the right side of my tongue has a prominent white line and it is quite painful, lasting for more than three days.
What can I do to improve this condition? Is there any medication I can apply? I am in Australia and can only buy medication from the pharmacy, but I haven't been able to identify the cause or what medication to purchase.
Thank you for your help.

The presence of a noticeable white area on the side of the tongue accompanied by pain may indicate inflammation of the mucosal surface of the tongue.
It is advisable to consult a dentist for further examination rather than self-medicating.

More Info
The presence of a painful white coating on the tongue can be attributed to several potential causes, and understanding these can help guide you toward appropriate remedies. Here are some common causes and suggested treatments:
Possible Causes
1. Oral Thrush (Candidiasis): This is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. It often presents as white patches on the tongue and can be painful.
2. Geographic Tongue: This benign condition causes patches on the tongue that can appear white and may be sensitive or painful. The exact cause is unknown, but it is often associated with stress, hormonal changes, or certain dietary deficiencies.
3. Leukoplakia: This condition results in thickened white patches on the tongue, which can be a response to irritation, smoking, or other factors. While leukoplakia itself is not usually painful, the underlying causes may be.
4. Lichen Planus: This inflammatory condition can affect the mucous membranes in the mouth, leading to white patches and discomfort.
5. Vitamin Deficiencies: Deficiencies in vitamins such as B12, folate, or iron can lead to changes in the tongue's appearance and may cause pain.
6. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Certain foods, dental products, or medications can cause irritation leading to a painful white coating.
Remedies and Treatments
1. Antifungal Treatment: If oral thrush is suspected, over-the-counter antifungal medications such as clotrimazole lozenges or nystatin oral suspension may be effective. Consult with a pharmacist about availability.
2. Good Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your tongue gently with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. This can help remove the coating and reduce discomfort.
3. Saltwater Rinse: A warm saltwater rinse can help soothe the pain and reduce inflammation. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse several times a day.
4. Topical Anesthetics: Over-the-counter topical anesthetics like benzocaine can provide temporary relief from pain. Look for products specifically designed for oral use.
5. Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated, as dry mouth can exacerbate discomfort. Drinking plenty of water can help.
6. Dietary Adjustments: Avoid spicy, acidic, or abrasive foods that may irritate the tongue further. Soft, bland foods may be easier to tolerate.
7. Vitamin Supplements: If you suspect a vitamin deficiency, consider taking a multivitamin or specific supplements after consulting with a healthcare professional.
8. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the condition persists for more than a week, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms (such as fever, difficulty swallowing, or significant pain), it is essential to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination and may recommend prescription medications or further testing.
Conclusion
While over-the-counter remedies can provide relief, it is crucial to identify the underlying cause of the painful white coating on your tongue. If self-care measures do not improve your symptoms, or if you have concerns about the condition, please consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. In Australia, you can visit a pharmacy for advice or seek assistance from a local healthcare provider if necessary.
