White patches on the left side of the tongue?

It seems that since middle school, there has been a white coating on the left side of my tongue.
I haven't paid much attention to it until recently when I noticed it again.
I can brush it off with a toothbrush (it requires a bit of pressure), but it reappears the next day.
Could this be caused by friction from my teeth?

It is likely to be tongue coating, which is primarily formed by a film of epithelial cells from the tongue, food debris, and oral bacteria adhering to the rough surface of the tongue, gradually accumulating over time.
It is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene, drink plenty of water, and continue to monitor the situation.

More Info

The presence of a white coating on the left side of the tongue can be attributed to several factors, and it is essential to understand the underlying causes to determine the appropriate course of action. The fact that you have noticed this white coating since middle school and that it can be brushed off suggests that it may not be a serious condition, but it is still worth investigating further.

One common cause of a white coating on the tongue is the accumulation of dead cells, bacteria, and food particles, which can create a biofilm on the surface of the tongue. This is often referred to as "oral thrush" when it is caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast, but in your case, since it can be brushed off easily, it may simply be a buildup of debris. This can occur due to poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, or even certain dietary habits.

Another possibility is that the white coating could be related to friction or irritation from dental appliances, such as braces, or from habits like tongue thrusting or excessive brushing. If you have been brushing your tongue vigorously, it could lead to irritation and a subsequent buildup of cells as the body attempts to heal the area. However, if the coating is persistent and recurrent, it may indicate an underlying condition that requires attention.

In some cases, a white coating can also be a sign of a more serious condition, such as leukoplakia, which is characterized by thickened white patches on the mucous membranes of the mouth. This condition can be caused by chronic irritation, often from tobacco use or alcohol consumption, and may require further evaluation to rule out precancerous changes.

To address your concern, it is advisable to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing of your teeth and tongue, as well as flossing to remove food particles and plaque. Staying hydrated is also crucial, as a dry mouth can exacerbate the issue. If the white coating persists despite good oral hygiene, or if you experience other symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in taste, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or a dentist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend additional tests, such as a biopsy, if necessary, to determine the exact cause of the white coating.

In summary, while the white coating on your tongue may not be a cause for immediate concern, it is essential to monitor the situation and maintain good oral hygiene. If the issue persists or worsens, seeking professional medical advice is the best course of action to ensure your oral health is not compromised.
