Medication issues

Hello, doctor.
I have been taking L-theanine to help alleviate anxiety and panic for almost a year now.
I would like to ask if it is safe to take fish oil and lecithin, as I have been consuming these supplements for a long time and haven't noticed any adverse effects.
Can I continue taking them? I'm concerned about any potential impact on the effectiveness of my medication.

Ken, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/12/06

Dr. Lin Mianzhang reply Psychiatry

Hello Ken: It seems that you value your health and are taking these supplements.
Fish oil and lecithin do not affect the efficacy of antidepressants, so you can take them with peace of mind.
However, it is important to note that there is more evidence supporting the effectiveness of fish oil in treating symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia, while lecithin lacks sufficient evidence in this regard.
If cost is a consideration, it is recommended to take fish oil only.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

When it comes to taking fish oil and lecithin while on anxiety medication, such as the one you mentioned (likely an SSRI or similar antidepressant), it is generally considered safe to do so. Fish oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, has been shown in various studies to have potential benefits for mental health, including reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Lecithin, on the other hand, is a source of phospholipids and choline, which are important for brain health, but its direct effects on anxiety are less well-documented.

The primary concern when combining supplements with prescription medications is the potential for interactions that could either diminish the effectiveness of the medication or exacerbate side effects. In the case of fish oil, there is no significant evidence to suggest that it interferes with the efficacy of most anxiety medications. However, it is important to consider the dosage and any other medications you may be taking. High doses of fish oil can have blood-thinning effects, especially if you are also taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet medications, which could increase the risk of bleeding.

Lecithin is generally regarded as safe and is often used as a dietary supplement without significant adverse effects. However, it is always wise to consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new supplements to your regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking multiple medications.

In your case, since you have been taking fish oil and lecithin for a while without noticing any adverse effects, it is likely that you can continue to do so. However, it is advisable to monitor how you feel and report any unusual symptoms to your doctor. If you experience any new side effects or if your anxiety symptoms worsen, it would be prudent to reassess your supplement intake.

Additionally, while fish oil has some evidence supporting its role in improving mood and reducing anxiety, it should not be seen as a replacement for prescribed medications. It can be a complementary approach, but the primary treatment for anxiety should be guided by your healthcare provider.

In summary, you can generally take fish oil and lecithin while on anxiety medication, but it is essential to do so under the guidance of your healthcare provider. They can help ensure that your overall treatment plan is safe and effective, taking into account all aspects of your health and any other medications you may be taking. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team regarding any supplements or changes to your treatment plan.
