Overcoming Height-Related Depression: Seeking Osteotomy for Shortening - Orthopedics

Share to:

I have been depressed for a long time due to my height and hope to undergo osteotomy to make myself shorter?

I am 177 cm tall, currently 19 years and one month old.
Since high school, I have been depressed due to my height issue, even going so far as to diet to avoid growing taller.
My weight is only 59 kg, making me very thin and lanky.
People have referred to me as a stick insect or a thin bamboo pole, which has severely impacted my self-confidence.
I still feel very sad every day because the depression caused by my height has not stopped.
The distance from my feet to my navel is 105 cm, and my upper body is about 72 cm.
I usually wear canvas shoes to avoid looking too tall; if I wear regular shoes, my height can exceed 180 cm, which makes me very uncomfortable.
My height and long legs feel very awkward.
As for my growth plates, the doctor assessed my pelvis and said that I would not grow taller, but three months later, it seems I grew another centimeter.
I found online that there is a limb lengthening surgery available in Taiwan, but I am also concerned about the possibility of becoming shorter.
My ideal height is between 168 to 170 cm; I don't dare to wish for too much, even though this height is already considered tall for girls in Taiwan.
I just want to be an ordinary person, so I won't stand out too much on the street.
Most girls around me are about 155 cm tall, and those over 160 cm are quite rare, which makes my suffering evident.
In school, most boys are between 170 to 172 cm tall, which makes me feel even more inferior.
I really want to be shorter; I have very little confidence in myself, and I have been depressed about this issue for a long time.

I have done some research, and Dr.
Wu Guan-biao from National Taiwan University has experience in this area.
I hope the doctor can provide an overview of the surgical process, including whether it only involves osteotomy or if nerves and blood vessels need to be cut and reattached.
My calves are very thin, my thighs are average, and my feet are long, making me a suitable candidate for surgery.
Lastly, I would like to inquire about the approximate costs, as well as the healing process and common side effects after the surgery.
Thank you very much, Dr.
Shi Guozheng.

There are surgeries to shorten bones, but they are typically performed for patients with leg length discrepancies, where a simple osteotomy is done on the longer bone to achieve equal length on both sides.
As for individuals who wish to undergo osteotomy due to excessive height, most physicians are reluctant to perform such procedures.
Essentially, the surgery involves cutting the predetermined length of the bone and then stabilizing the fracture site with plates or screws to allow for healing.
Afterward, the internal fixation devices are removed, and the procedure does not involve nerves or blood vessels.
Dr.
Wu from National Taiwan University is an expert in pediatric orthopedics and has experience in limb lengthening surgeries; you might consider consulting him.
A height of 177 cm is quite good, and you can leverage this advantage for various developments.

It sounds like you are experiencing significant distress related to your height, which has led to feelings of depression and low self-esteem. Height-related issues can profoundly impact one's self-image, especially during formative years like adolescence and early adulthood. It’s important to recognize that these feelings are valid and that seeking help is a positive step forward.

Firstly, it’s crucial to understand that your height, while it may feel like a defining characteristic, does not determine your worth or potential. Many individuals who are taller or shorter than average face similar challenges, and it’s not uncommon for people to struggle with body image issues. However, the desire to undergo surgical procedures, such as osteotomy for height reduction, should be approached with caution and thorough consideration.

Osteotomy is a surgical procedure that involves cutting and repositioning bones. In the context of height reduction, it typically involves the femur (thigh bone) or tibia (shin bone). The surgery can be quite complex and may involve not only the bones but also the surrounding muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Here’s a general overview of the process:
1. Preoperative Assessment: Before surgery, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary. This includes imaging studies (like X-rays or MRIs) to assess bone structure and growth plates. Your doctor will also evaluate your overall health and discuss your expectations and concerns.

2. Surgical Procedure: The surgery usually involves making incisions to access the bones. The surgeon will cut the bone and reposition it to achieve the desired height. Depending on the specific technique used, there may be a need to realign or reconnect nerves and blood vessels. This is a delicate process, and the skill of the surgeon is paramount.

3. Postoperative Care: After surgery, you will likely need to stay in the hospital for monitoring. Recovery can take several weeks to months, during which you may need physical therapy to regain strength and mobility. Pain management will also be a crucial part of your recovery.

4. Potential Risks and Complications: As with any surgery, there are risks involved. These can include infection, blood clots, nerve damage, and complications related to anesthesia. Additionally, there may be aesthetic concerns if the results do not meet your expectations. It’s essential to discuss these risks thoroughly with your surgeon.

5. Cost Considerations: The cost of osteotomy can vary widely based on the complexity of the procedure, the surgeon’s experience, and the facility where the surgery is performed. In Taiwan, costs can range significantly, so it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for a more accurate estimate.

6. Emotional and Psychological Support: Given your history of depression related to your height, it’s crucial to consider the psychological aspects of undergoing such a procedure. Engaging with a mental health professional before and after surgery can provide support and help you manage any emotional challenges that arise.

In conclusion, while surgical options exist for height reduction, it’s essential to weigh the benefits against the risks and emotional implications. Consulting with a qualified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in this area, as well as a mental health professional, can provide you with a comprehensive understanding of your options. Remember, your value is not defined by your height, and there are many paths to building self-confidence and self-acceptance.
