Normal Variations in Glans Anatomy: When to Seek Help - Urology

Please provide the specific question regarding the glans penis?

Hello Dr.
Lee, I visited a urologist a few months ago because I noticed a small white spot on my glans while showering.
I went to the hospital and the doctor examined it with a light but couldn't see it well.
After I showed it to him, he said it was nothing to worry about.
However, sometimes when I shower, I don't see it, but today I noticed it again, although it became less noticeable after rinsing.
I would like to ask if it's normal for the glans to appear slightly wrinkled when dry, and if the sebaceous glands the doctor mentioned are normally present on the glans, as I thought it was supposed to be smooth.
I'm unsure if I should go back for another consultation regarding this issue, and I would appreciate your advice.
Thank you.

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

If there is no risky sexual behavior and no issues with sexually transmitted infections, I believe the physician's intention is to suggest that it is a benign skin reaction.
As for whether there are sebaceous glands on the glans, current literature generally indicates that they are lacking.

When it comes to understanding the normal variations in glans anatomy, it's important to recognize that the appearance of the glans (the head of the penis) can vary significantly among individuals. The presence of small white spots or bumps on the glans can often be attributed to normal anatomical features, such as sebaceous glands or pearly penile papules, which are benign and typically do not require treatment.

Sebaceous glands are small oil-producing glands that are present in various parts of the body, including the genital area. They can sometimes appear as small white or yellowish spots on the glans. These glands help to keep the skin moisturized and can become more noticeable when the skin is dry or wrinkled. It is also normal for the glans to have some degree of wrinkling or texture, especially when it is not fully erect.

Pearly penile papules are another common benign condition that can appear as small, dome-shaped bumps around the corona of the glans. They are harmless and do not require treatment. Many men may not notice these features until they are specifically looking for them, which can lead to unnecessary concern.

In your case, since a urologist has already evaluated the area and determined that there is no cause for concern, it is likely that what you are observing is a normal anatomical variation. However, if you notice any changes in the appearance of the glans, such as increased size, color changes, or if you experience any discomfort, pain, or other symptoms, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation.

It’s also worth noting that the glans should generally appear smooth and moist, especially when aroused. If you find that the dryness or wrinkling is persistent or bothersome, it may be helpful to discuss this with a healthcare provider who can offer advice on proper hygiene and care for the area.

In summary, while it’s understandable to be concerned about any changes in your body, the features you describe are likely normal variations. If you continue to feel uncertain or if any new symptoms arise, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for reassurance or further evaluation. It's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
