Scleral issues
I am experiencing occasional severe pain in my eye due to a sensation of foreign body pressure within 15 days post-surgery.
The location of the pressure is inconsistent; sometimes it occurs, sometimes it does not.
In the first 15 days after the surgery, if I did not lie down continuously, the pressure pain would easily arise, requiring pain relief medication.
When I consulted my doctor, they mentioned that the retinal attachment looks good.
I would like to know if this is normal.
Now, 23 days post-surgery, I am avoiding excessive movement.
The pressure pain has decreased and is not as uncomfortable, but the sensation of a foreign body (occasionally) is still quite strong.
Currently, my eye remains very red, and my vision is still impaired.
Is this phenomenon normal?
Regarding my other eye, which had a hole treated with laser, it has been a month since the laser treatment.
Does this indicate that there are no significant issues? Is there a possibility of developing another hole? I am concerned because a general clinic indicated that there is a hole, but Chang Gung Hospital stated there is none.
I am very anxious about this situation, as my laser treatment was performed at another clinic.

Dear Miss Hsiao-Hong,
Regarding the discomfort in your eyes after surgery, it is advisable to consult your surgeon for more accurate information, as I cannot confirm your post-operative condition.
The formation of a new hole is certainly possible; however, as long as you receive a laser treatment promptly, there is no need to be overly concerned.
Sincerely,

Post-surgery eye pain and the sensation of a foreign body can be concerning, especially after procedures like retinal surgery. It’s important to understand that some discomfort and unusual sensations can be part of the healing process, but persistent or severe symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
In your case, experiencing pain and a sensation of pressure or a foreign body in your eye 15 days post-surgery is not uncommon. After retinal surgery, the eye undergoes significant changes as it heals, which can lead to various sensations, including discomfort, redness, and even temporary changes in vision. The fact that you mentioned the pain is not constant and has decreased over time is a positive sign, indicating that your eye may be healing.
The sensation of a foreign body can arise from several factors. After surgery, the eye may be more sensitive due to inflammation, swelling, or the presence of sutures or other materials used during the procedure. Additionally, if the eye is still red, it suggests that there is ongoing inflammation, which can contribute to discomfort. The healing process can vary significantly from person to person, and while some may experience a quick recovery, others may take longer to feel normal again.
Regarding your concern about the laser treatment for the other eye, it is reassuring that the recent evaluation did not find any new holes or issues. Laser treatment is often used to address retinal tears or holes, and if your doctor has confirmed that there are no current problems, it is a good indication that the treatment was effective. However, it’s essential to continue monitoring your eye health and follow up with your eye care provider regularly.
It is also crucial to avoid any activities that could strain your eyes during the healing process, such as prolonged screen time or exposure to bright lights. Resting your eyes and following your doctor's post-operative care instructions can help facilitate healing.
If you continue to experience significant pain, redness, or changes in vision, it is imperative to seek further evaluation. Sometimes, complications can arise after surgery, and timely intervention can prevent long-term issues.
In summary, while some discomfort and sensations are normal after eye surgery, persistent or severe symptoms warrant further investigation. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns, and do not hesitate to seek a second opinion if you feel uncertain about your diagnosis or treatment plan. Your eye health is paramount, and ensuring you have the right information and care is essential for a successful recovery.
