Will this result in pregnancy?
Hello doctor: I had intercourse with my girlfriend today.
We are both first-timers and we used condoms throughout the entire process.
We used family-sized condoms certified by the health department.
However, in the middle, I had unprotected penetration for a couple of thrusts before putting the condom back on to finish.
My girlfriend's last menstrual period started on December 22 and ended on December 28.
We had intercourse on January 3.
Is there a chance she could get pregnant?

Hello, the failure rate of contraception using condoms alone is over 5%, which is less reliable compared to other methods.
It is generally not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
I suggest you consider emergency contraception methods (such as emergency contraceptive pills or intrauterine devices).
If your period is more than a week late, it is also necessary to take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to understanding the risks of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, it's essential to consider several factors, including the timing of the menstrual cycle, the effectiveness of contraception, and the nature of the sexual activity. In your case, you mentioned that you and your girlfriend used a condom for most of the intercourse but had a brief period of unprotected penetration. This situation raises valid concerns about the possibility of pregnancy.
Firstly, let's discuss the menstrual cycle. The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation typically occurs around 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period. In your girlfriend's case, she had her period start on December 22 and end on December 28. If we assume a typical cycle, she would likely ovulate around January 5, which is just a couple of days after your encounter on January 3. This timing is crucial because the days leading up to and including ovulation are when a woman is most fertile.
Now, regarding the use of condoms: condoms are a highly effective form of contraception when used correctly. However, any lapse in their use, such as the brief period of unprotected intercourse you described, can introduce the risk of pregnancy. Pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, and if any sperm were present during the unprotected moments, there is a potential risk of pregnancy.
Given that your girlfriend's ovulation was likely around the time of your encounter, there is a possibility of pregnancy, albeit it may be lower due to the condom use for the majority of the intercourse. However, it is important to note that no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and the risk of pregnancy cannot be entirely ruled out.
If your girlfriend is concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, she may consider taking a home pregnancy test if her period is late. Additionally, if the unprotected intercourse occurred within 72 hours, she might explore the option of emergency contraception, which can significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy if taken promptly.
In terms of psychological preparation, it’s essential to communicate openly with your girlfriend about your concerns and feelings regarding the situation. If pregnancy does occur, it’s important to discuss the next steps together, whether that involves parenting, adoption, or considering other options.
In conclusion, while the use of condoms significantly reduces the risk of pregnancy, any unprotected intercourse can introduce a risk. Given the timing of your encounter relative to your girlfriend's menstrual cycle, there is a possibility of pregnancy, but it is not guaranteed. Open communication and timely action, such as taking a pregnancy test or considering emergency contraception, are key steps to take in this situation.
