Drug side effects

I would like to ask the doctor, I have some issues with frequent urination and saw a physician who prescribed Uroflow 4mg.
After taking five pills, I noticed that my nasal congestion became very severe, making it difficult to sleep (I already had nasal congestion before).
I also experienced ejaculation difficulties; I felt pleasure but only ejaculated 2 to 3 drops.
I would like to know how long these side effects will last after stopping the medication.
Thank you.

An Ye, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/01/03

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

Don't worry, you will recover after stopping the medication.
It should take about 3 days!

When it comes to understanding the side effects of urological medications, particularly those like Uroprine (often referred to as Urief or similar medications), it's essential to recognize that these drugs can have a range of effects on the body, and individual responses can vary significantly.
Uroprine, which is commonly used to treat conditions such as overactive bladder, can lead to side effects like nasal congestion, difficulty sleeping, and sexual dysfunction, including issues with ejaculation. These side effects arise due to the medication's mechanism of action, which often involves anticholinergic properties. Anticholinergics work by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in various bodily functions, including bladder control and the regulation of secretions in the nasal passages.
In your case, the nasal congestion and sleep disturbances you are experiencing could be attributed to the anticholinergic effects of the medication. These symptoms may improve after discontinuing the medication, but the duration of these side effects can vary. Generally, once the medication is stopped, side effects may begin to resolve within a few days to a week, depending on factors such as your metabolism, the dosage you were taking, and how long you were on the medication. However, if symptoms persist beyond a week or worsen, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Regarding the sexual side effects, such as the reduced volume of ejaculation, this is also a known effect of medications that influence the autonomic nervous system. The duration of these effects after stopping the medication can also vary. Some individuals may notice a return to normal function within a few days, while others may take longer. If you have concerns about these side effects, particularly if they are affecting your quality of life, discussing alternative treatment options with your doctor is advisable.

It's also important to consider that while medications can cause side effects, they are often prescribed because their benefits in managing symptoms can outweigh these risks. If you find that the side effects are intolerable, your healthcare provider may suggest adjusting the dosage, switching to a different medication, or adding another treatment to mitigate the side effects.

In summary, while Uroprine can effectively manage symptoms of urinary frequency and urgency, it can also lead to side effects such as nasal congestion, sleep disturbances, and sexual dysfunction. The duration of these side effects after stopping the medication can vary, but many patients find relief within a week. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any side effects you experience, as they can help you navigate your treatment options and ensure that you receive the best care possible.
