Side effects of using budesonide inhalation aerosol?
Hello, doctor.
Two weeks ago, I caught a cold and started experiencing nighttime coughing without any significant sputum.
Due to the increased frequency of the nighttime cough, I visited the chest clinic for an examination.
Auscultation revealed no wheezing, and the doctor prescribed Flixotide Evohaler 50 micrograms to be used once in the morning and once at night, with one puff each time.
I have been using it for two days, but after using it last night before bed, I experienced an inexplicable feeling of restlessness about an hour later (I took one Alltec antihistamine an hour after using the inhaler).
I did not experience this symptom during the first two uses, and I am unsure if the restlessness is related to the inhaler or if it is due to persistent throat irritation making it difficult to sleep.
I would like to ask the doctor if I should stop using the inhaler or continue the treatment.
Additionally, if I experience anxiety symptoms, is it safe to take half a Xanax? (I am unsure if taking Alltec and Xanax together would increase CNS depressant effects.) Thank you very much.

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Pulmonology
Dear Lethe: The active ingredient in Fixotide Evohaler is a corticosteroid.
Generally, the side effects you mentioned are quite rare, but some individuals may experience slight excitement.
Antihistamines can cause drowsiness, and combining them with Xanax may lead to increased sleepiness and fatigue.
However, taking half a pill should be manageable.

More Info
Flixotide Evohaler, which contains the active ingredient fluticasone propionate, is a corticosteroid used primarily for the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by reducing inflammation in the airways, making it easier to breathe. While Flixotide is generally well-tolerated, it can have side effects, and it’s important to be aware of these, especially when experiencing unusual symptoms like anxiety or agitation.
Common side effects of Flixotide include oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth), hoarseness, and throat irritation. These side effects are often due to the local effects of the medication on the mucous membranes. However, systemic side effects can occur, particularly with higher doses or prolonged use. These may include adrenal suppression, osteoporosis, and increased susceptibility to infections.
In your case, the onset of anxiety or restlessness after using the Flixotide Evohaler could be concerning, especially since it occurred after the first two doses without incident. While corticosteroids can sometimes cause mood changes or anxiety, this is relatively rare with inhaled formulations like Flixotide. The timing of your symptoms—occurring about an hour after use—could suggest a few possibilities. It might be related to the medication itself, but it could also be influenced by other factors, such as the antihistamine (Alltec) you took afterward or even the underlying condition that prompted the use of Flixotide.
Regarding the combination of Alltec and Xanax (alprazolam), caution is warranted. Both medications can have central nervous system (CNS) effects, with Alltec potentially causing drowsiness and Xanax being a sedative. While taking a half dose of Xanax may not lead to significant CNS depression for most individuals, it’s essential to monitor how you feel and avoid activities that require full alertness, such as driving. If you are experiencing heightened anxiety, it may be beneficial to consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen.
As for whether to continue using Flixotide, it is crucial to weigh the benefits of controlling your nighttime cough against the anxiety symptoms you are experiencing. If the cough is significantly impacting your sleep and quality of life, it may be worth continuing the inhaler while addressing the anxiety separately. However, if the anxiety persists or worsens, it would be prudent to discuss this with your doctor. They may consider adjusting your treatment plan, which could include switching to a different inhaler or exploring alternative therapies for your anxiety.
In summary, while Flixotide Evohaler is effective for managing respiratory symptoms, it can have side effects, including potential mood changes. If you experience anxiety after using it, consider discussing this with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your doctor will help ensure that you receive the most appropriate care for your situation.
