Treatment for pubic lice?
Hello, doctor.
After treating pubic lice, how can one determine if the treatment was successful? Is it possible to effectively treat pubic lice without medication, just by removing hair? Since the treatment (which included hair removal and washing clothes in hot water, but no medication) was done a while ago, and I haven't experienced any itching or seen any suspicious symptoms, does this mean I am cured? Thank you.

Did you not use any medication, only hair removal? Did the doctor not prescribe you any medication? As for whether it has been treated successfully, I cannot confirm without seeing it.

To determine if treatment for pubic lice (Pthirus pubis) has been successful, several factors should be considered. Pubic lice infestation, commonly known as "crabs," can cause significant discomfort and itching, and effective treatment is essential to eliminate the infestation and prevent re-infestation.
1. Symptom Resolution: One of the primary indicators of successful treatment is the resolution of symptoms. If you have not experienced itching or discomfort in the pubic area since the treatment, this is a positive sign. However, it is important to note that itching may persist for a short time even after successful treatment due to skin irritation from the bites. If the itching has completely subsided and you feel comfortable, this is a good indication that the lice have been eliminated.
2. Visual Inspection: After treatment, it is advisable to conduct a thorough visual inspection of the pubic area. Look for any signs of live lice or nits (lice eggs). Adult lice are small, about the size of a pinhead, and can be difficult to see, but nits are easier to spot as they are attached to the hair shafts. If you do not see any lice or nits after a couple of weeks following treatment, it is likely that the infestation has been successfully treated.
3. Follow-Up: It is recommended to follow up with a healthcare provider if there are any lingering concerns or if symptoms return. A healthcare professional can perform a more thorough examination and provide additional treatment options if necessary.
4. Non-Medicated Treatment: You mentioned that you did not use any medication and relied solely on hair removal and washing clothes in hot water. While removing hair can help reduce the number of lice and prevent re-infestation, it is not a guaranteed method for eliminating pubic lice. Lice can survive for a short time away from the human body, and without the use of insecticidal treatments, there is a risk that some lice may remain. Washing clothes and bedding in hot water is an effective way to kill lice and nits, but it is generally recommended to use a medicated treatment specifically designed to kill lice for complete eradication.
5. Time Frame: It is important to give it some time after treatment to ensure that any remaining lice or nits have been eliminated. Typically, if no new symptoms appear within a few weeks after treatment, it can be considered successful. However, if you notice any signs of re-infestation, such as itching or the presence of lice or nits, it would be prudent to seek medical advice.
In conclusion, while the absence of symptoms and visual signs of lice are strong indicators of successful treatment, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for a definitive assessment. If you have concerns about the effectiveness of your treatment or if symptoms persist, consider reaching out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
