Pubic Lice: Treatment Options and Effectiveness of Scabicides - Dermatology

Pubic lice issue

Hello, I may have contracted pubic lice from using a gym towel, as I noticed the bugs and their eggs.
I visited the hospital and saw a doctor twice, applying two tubes of 5% permethrin.
After a week, I still feel that the condition hasn't fully resolved.
I would like to know if medications like Scabicide (such as permethrin) are effective against pubic lice, as I saw that the product description mentions treatment for scabies and lice infections.
I'm not sure if pubic lice falls under the category of lice infections.
What is the efficacy of Scabicide against pubic lice? Thank you.
I have been shaving the area daily with a razor.

More Info

Pubic lice, also known as "crabs," are tiny parasitic insects that infest the coarse hair in the genital area. They are a type of louse, similar to head lice and body lice, and can cause itching and discomfort. The treatment for pubic lice typically involves the use of topical insecticides, commonly referred to as scabicides or pediculicides.
You mentioned using a product called "疥寧" (which translates to "Scabicide" in English) that contains 5% permethrin or a similar active ingredient. While scabicides are primarily designed to treat scabies (caused by a different type of mite), they can also be effective against lice, including pubic lice. However, the effectiveness of these treatments can vary based on several factors, including the specific formulation, the extent of the infestation, and adherence to the treatment regimen.

In general, the treatment for pubic lice involves the following steps:
1. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter options include permethrin cream (1% for lice) and pyrethrin-based products. Prescription treatments may include stronger formulations. It's essential to follow the instructions carefully, applying the product to the affected area and leaving it on for the recommended duration.

2. Repeat Treatment: Lice eggs (nits) can survive treatment, so it's often recommended to repeat the application after 7-10 days to ensure that any newly hatched lice are also eliminated.

3. Cleaning and Decontamination: In addition to treating the affected area, it's crucial to wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water and dry them on high heat to kill any remaining lice or eggs. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for at least two weeks.

4. Avoiding Reinfestation: To prevent reinfestation, avoid close contact with others until the infestation is fully resolved. Inform sexual partners so they can also be treated if necessary.

Regarding your concern about the effectiveness of the scabicide you used, it is important to note that while scabicides can be effective against lice, they may not be the first-line treatment specifically for pubic lice. If you have followed the treatment regimen and still experience symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult your healthcare provider for alternative treatments or a prescription specifically designed for lice.

In summary, while scabicides like "疥寧" can have some efficacy against pubic lice, it is crucial to ensure proper application, follow-up treatments, and thorough cleaning to achieve the best results. If symptoms persist, seeking further medical advice is recommended to explore other treatment options.
