Vaginal discharge

Doctor, I had intercourse on the 23rd and experienced bleeding afterward.
I thought it was just the start of my period, so I used a pad.
I noticed that the discharge was yellow-green in color, but it wasn't itchy, had no odor, and wasn't foamy.
I thought it might resolve in a few days, but two days later, the situation is still the same.
Am I infected, or is this just normal discharge?

Gao Bobo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/01/26

Dear Dr.
Gao Bobo,
The change in the shape of the discharge is usually characterized by it being clear or white, which may indicate vaginal inflammation.
Your immune system may help improve the inflammation.
However, if the vaginal discomfort, itching, or unusual odor persists for several days, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist for examination and treatment.

Understanding abnormal vaginal discharge is crucial for identifying potential health issues and ensuring timely medical intervention. Based on your description, it seems you experienced some unusual discharge following sexual intercourse, which has persisted for a couple of days. The discharge is yellow-green in color, but you noted that it is not accompanied by itching, odor, or a foamy consistency.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that vaginal discharge can vary widely in color, consistency, and volume throughout the menstrual cycle. Normal discharge is typically clear or milky white and may change in consistency due to hormonal fluctuations. However, any significant changes in color, especially to yellow or green, can indicate an underlying issue.

The yellow-green color of your discharge could suggest a few possibilities. One common cause of such discharge is a bacterial infection, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), which can occur when there is an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina. BV is often characterized by a fishy odor, but not all cases present with this symptom. Another possibility is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as trichomoniasis, which can also cause yellow-green discharge and may be associated with irritation or discomfort.
Given that you experienced bleeding after intercourse, this could also be a sign of trauma to the vaginal walls or cervix, especially if there was insufficient lubrication or if the intercourse was particularly vigorous. However, bleeding can also be associated with infections or other conditions, such as cervical polyps or even more serious issues like cervical cancer, although the latter is less common.

Since the discharge has persisted for more than a couple of days without improvement, it would be advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a pelvic examination and possibly take samples for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. This may include testing for STIs, checking for signs of infection, or evaluating for other conditions that could cause abnormal discharge.

In terms of treatment, it will depend on the underlying cause. If an infection is diagnosed, antibiotics or antifungal medications may be prescribed. It’s also essential to avoid any irritants, such as scented soaps or douches, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.

In conclusion, while some changes in vaginal discharge can be normal, the yellow-green color, especially following bleeding, warrants further investigation. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to reproductive health. Seeking medical advice will not only provide peace of mind but also ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Remember, your health is paramount, and open communication with your healthcare provider is key to maintaining it.
