Uterine polyps

Is it okay to drink Shenghua soup three days before menstruation? Will it increase the risk of polyps? Previously, my doctor mentioned that if I do not wish to become pregnant, I do not need to have them removed, but I recently noticed that I experience bleeding during ovulation that resembles the amount of bleeding on the first day of my period.
I wonder if this is related to the Shenghua soup...

Dr. Huang Zifei reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dear Coco,
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the purpose of the Shenghua Decoction is to promote the expulsion of blood clots from the uterus, so it is not necessary to take it before menstruation begins.
Additionally, there are no large-scale studies in Western medicine that indicate a correlation between Shenghua Decoction and polyps.
Recently, there have been numerous cases of ovulatory bleeding, so it is recommended to consult with a gynecologist for examination.
Please temporarily discontinue the use of Shenghua Decoction.

When it comes to the consumption of herbal soups, particularly during the days leading up to menstruation, there are several factors to consider, especially in relation to uterine polyps. Uterine polyps are growths attached to the inner wall of the uterus that extend into the uterine cavity. They can vary in size and may cause symptoms such as irregular bleeding, heavy menstrual periods, or spotting between periods.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that herbal soups can contain a variety of ingredients, each with its own potential effects on the body. Some herbs are known to have hormonal effects or can influence uterine contractions, which may affect menstrual cycles and conditions like polyps. For instance, certain herbs may promote blood flow to the pelvic area or have anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically influence the condition of uterine polyps.

Regarding your specific question about drinking herbal soup, such as "生化湯" (Shenghua Tang), in the days leading up to menstruation, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that consuming this type of herbal soup will directly cause the growth of uterine polyps or exacerbate existing ones. However, if the soup contains ingredients that stimulate the uterus or alter hormonal balance, it could potentially influence menstrual symptoms or bleeding patterns.

The concern about experiencing bleeding during ovulation, which resembles the first day of menstruation, is noteworthy. This type of bleeding can occur for various reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, the presence of polyps, or other underlying conditions. If you have been advised by your doctor that the polyps do not require removal unless you are trying to conceive, it is crucial to monitor any changes in your menstrual cycle or bleeding patterns closely.

If you suspect that the herbal soup may be contributing to your symptoms, it would be prudent to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the specific ingredients in the herbal soup you are consuming. Additionally, if you notice any significant changes in your menstrual cycle or if the bleeding becomes heavier or more frequent, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly.

In summary, while drinking herbal soup before menstruation is generally considered safe, it is vital to be aware of the ingredients and their potential effects on your body, especially concerning uterine polyps. Always consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your menstrual health or the impact of dietary choices on existing conditions. Regular check-ups and open communication with your doctor can help manage any issues related to uterine polyps and overall reproductive health.
