Regarding hair loss?

I would like to ask about my recent experience where every time I wash and blow-dry my hair, I notice a significant amount of hair loss, approximately 100 strands today.
Recently, I have also been feeling colder in my hands and feet, and my blood pressure is around 100/60 (52 kg, 158 cm, 22 years old).
Is this amount of hair loss normal?

Li, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/02/11

Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology

Ms.
Li: There are many reasons for hair loss, and the vast majority are temporary.
However, we still need to rule out other causes, including thyroid issues, anemia, genetic factors, autoimmune problems, and so on.
If hair loss persists for more than three months, it is advisable to seek treatment at a dermatology clinic.
Wishing you well.

Hair loss can be a concerning issue for many individuals, especially when it seems to be occurring in larger quantities than usual. The question of whether losing around 100 strands of hair daily is normal is a common one. To provide a comprehensive understanding, let's delve into the normal hair shedding process, potential causes of increased hair loss, and what you can do about it.

Firstly, it's important to understand that hair shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. On average, it is considered normal to lose between 50 to 100 strands of hair each day. This shedding is a part of the hair's life cycle, which includes phases of growth (anagen), rest (telogen), and shedding (catagen). Therefore, if you are losing around 100 strands, it falls within the normal range, especially if you are not noticing any thinning or bald patches.

However, several factors can contribute to increased hair loss, and it’s essential to consider these in your situation. Stress, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions, and certain medications can all lead to increased shedding. Given your age and the fact that you mentioned feeling cold in your hands and feet, along with a blood pressure reading of 100/60, it may be worth exploring whether there are underlying health issues at play.

1. Stress and Anxiety: Emotional or physical stress can trigger a type of hair loss known as telogen effluvium, where hair follicles prematurely enter the shedding phase. If you've been experiencing stress, this could be a contributing factor.

2. Nutritional Deficiencies: Hair health is closely tied to nutrition. Deficiencies in iron, vitamin D, biotin, and other essential nutrients can lead to hair loss. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is crucial for maintaining healthy hair.

3. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur with thyroid issues, can also lead to hair loss. Given your age, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid dysfunction could be potential causes.

4. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as autoimmune disorders, can lead to hair loss. If you have any other symptoms or health concerns, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider.

5. Medications: Some medications can have side effects that include hair loss. If you are taking any medications, check with your doctor to see if this could be a factor.

Considering your blood pressure reading of 100/60, which is on the lower side, it might be beneficial to discuss this with a healthcare professional. Low blood pressure can sometimes lead to symptoms such as dizziness and cold extremities, and it could be related to your overall health and hair loss.

In summary, while losing around 100 strands of hair daily can be normal, the context of your overall health is essential. If you are experiencing other symptoms, such as cold hands and feet or if you notice significant changes in your hair density, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including blood tests if necessary, to rule out any underlying conditions and provide tailored advice. In the meantime, ensure you maintain a balanced diet, manage stress, and practice good hair care to support your hair health.
