Hair Loss: Is Losing 100 Strands a Day Normal? - Dermatology

Hair loss volume

Hello Doctor: Last night while washing my hair, I lost about 48 strands.
When I was blow-drying my hair, I lost around 50 more, adding up to nearly 100 strands.
This morning, I lost some more while combing my hair.
I wonder if I will lose more throughout the day at work.
Is it normal to lose around 100 strands a day? Is my hair loss considered normal? Should I go to the hospital for a preliminary check, or should I observe for a while longer? Thank you for your response, Doctor.

Hello: Generally speaking, losing up to 100 hairs a day is considered acceptable.
If this is just a one-time occurrence, I recommend monitoring the situation for a few more days.
However, if the condition continues to worsen, it would be advisable to consult a dermatologist for an examination.
Thank you!

Losing hair is a common concern for many individuals, and it’s important to understand what constitutes normal hair loss. The average person loses between 50 to 100 strands of hair per day, which is considered normal. This daily shedding is part of the natural hair growth cycle, which includes phases of growth (anagen), rest (telogen), and shedding (catagen).
When you wash your hair or brush it, it’s not unusual to notice a higher number of strands falling out, especially if you have longer hair. The hair that you see falling out is often hair that was already in the shedding phase. Factors such as hair type, hair care practices, and even the time of year can influence how much hair you lose on a daily basis. For instance, many people experience increased shedding during seasonal changes, particularly in the fall.

In your case, you mentioned losing around 48 strands while washing your hair and another 50 while blow-drying, which totals close to 100 strands. This is within the normal range. However, if you notice that your hair is thinning significantly, or if you see patches of hair loss, it may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss), telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss due to stress or hormonal changes), or other underlying health issues.

Given your concerns, it’s wise to monitor your hair loss over the next few weeks. If you continue to lose hair at the same rate or if you notice any changes in your scalp or hair texture, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional or a dermatologist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests to rule out any underlying conditions that could be contributing to your hair loss, such as thyroid issues, iron deficiency, or autoimmune disorders.

In addition to medical evaluation, consider your overall health and lifestyle factors. Stress, poor nutrition, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all impact hair health. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those known to support hair health like biotin, zinc, and iron, can be beneficial. Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, and adequate sleep can also help mitigate hair loss.

In summary, losing around 100 strands of hair a day is generally considered normal. However, if you have concerns about the amount of hair you are losing or if you notice other symptoms, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. Observing your hair loss pattern over time and considering lifestyle factors can provide valuable insights into your hair health.
