Will the use of Minoxidil cause a decrease in testosterone levels?

I recently started using Rogaine (Minoxidil 5%) and I'm concerned about it causing a decrease in testosterone levels.
Doctor, is this a possible side effect?

Dr. Li Yufen reply Dermatology

Hello: The main mechanism of action of Minoxidil 5% is to cause vasodilation, which promotes blood circulation to the hair follicles in the scalp, and it does not lead to a decrease in testosterone levels.
For precautions regarding the use of Minoxidil, you can refer to the health newsletter from National Taiwan University Hospital at https://epaper.ntuh.gov.tw/health/201901/health_3.html.
Thank you!

Minoxidil, commonly known for its use in treating hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia, primarily functions as a vasodilator. It works by widening blood vessels, which enhances blood flow to hair follicles, thereby promoting hair growth. Importantly, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that Minoxidil has any direct effect on testosterone levels in the body.

The concern regarding Minoxidil and testosterone levels may stem from its association with hair growth and the hormonal influences on hair follicles. However, Minoxidil does not alter the production or metabolism of testosterone. The mechanism of action of Minoxidil is localized to the scalp and does not interfere with the endocrine system responsible for hormone production.

In clinical practice, patients using Minoxidil have not reported significant hormonal side effects, including changes in testosterone levels. The primary side effects associated with Minoxidil usage are typically localized to the application area, such as scalp irritation, dryness, or unwanted facial hair growth in some cases. These side effects are generally mild and reversible upon discontinuation of the medication.

It's also worth noting that testosterone levels can fluctuate due to various factors unrelated to Minoxidil, including age, stress, diet, and overall health. If you have concerns about your testosterone levels, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider who can conduct appropriate tests and provide guidance based on your individual health status.

In summary, using Minoxidil 5% for hair loss should not lead to a decrease in testosterone levels. If you experience any unusual symptoms or have further concerns about hormonal changes while using Minoxidil, it is advisable to discuss these with your healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation. They can help determine if any other underlying issues may be affecting your hormone levels or overall health.
