Pain in the lower left chest?

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing sudden sharp pains on the left side of my chest, extending to the lower part of my left chest.
Sometimes the pain lasts only a few seconds, while other times it can last 3 to 5 minutes (sometimes pressing on it causes pain).
I would like to know which specialty I should see for an examination.
A while ago, I went to the emergency room due to chest tightness and consulted a cardiologist, but the doctor said my heart tests were normal.
However, lately, I've been having sudden pain in the lower part of my left chest.
Could this possibly be caused by gastroesophageal reflux?

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, gastroesophageal reflux typically causes pain in the upper abdomen rather than the left chest.
I'm not sure if your pain worsens with inhalation or specific movements.
Based on your description, it seems more similar to pleurisy, costochondritis, or a muscle strain.
I recommend applying heat and getting plenty of rest.
If the pain persists, you may consider consulting a pulmonologist.
Thank you for your question.

Sudden left chest pain can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical help. Given your description of the pain being sudden, intermittent, and sometimes lasting for a few seconds to several minutes, there are several possibilities to consider.

Firstly, since you have already seen a cardiologist and had tests that ruled out heart-related issues, it is less likely that your pain is due to a cardiac condition. However, it is essential to keep in mind that not all heart issues can be detected through standard tests, especially in younger individuals or those without classic risk factors. Therefore, if you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain radiating to the arm, neck, or jaw, you should seek immediate medical attention.

One common cause of left-sided chest pain that you mentioned is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD can cause a burning sensation in the chest, often mistaken for heart pain. It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to discomfort. If your pain is associated with eating, lying down, or certain foods, GERD could be a contributing factor. Over-the-counter antacids or medications that reduce stomach acid may provide relief, but it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Another possibility is musculoskeletal pain, which can arise from muscle strain, inflammation, or injury to the chest wall. This type of pain often worsens with movement or palpation. If you have been engaging in activities that strain your upper body, such as heavy lifting or intense exercise, this could be a reason for your discomfort. A physical examination by a healthcare professional can help determine if musculoskeletal issues are at play.

Additionally, anxiety and stress can manifest as chest pain. Panic attacks, in particular, can lead to sudden episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms, including chest pain. If you suspect that anxiety might be contributing to your symptoms, discussing this with a mental health professional could be beneficial.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience new symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with a healthcare provider. Depending on your symptoms, they may recommend further testing, such as an upper gastrointestinal series, endoscopy, or imaging studies like a chest X-ray or CT scan, to rule out other potential causes.

In summary, while your previous cardiac evaluations are reassuring, the sudden left chest pain you are experiencing could be related to several non-cardiac issues, including GERD, musculoskeletal problems, or anxiety. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical advice if you have concerns or if your symptoms change. Always prioritize your health and do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
