Left chest pain?
Sudden sharp pain in the lower left chest has occurred three times this year.
It hurts when I move gently or take a deep breath, and my heart seems to be racing.
Each time the pain occurs, I am afraid to move and cannot sleep.
I also hear gurgling sounds when I place my hand on the lower left chest (I am unsure if this is related).
I experienced similar pain once or twice four years ago, but it has only recurred this year, and the duration of the pain has been longer.
What could be the underlying issue?

Dr. Huang Ruiming reply Pulmonology
It may be a pleural issue; I recommend coming to the outpatient clinic for an X-ray and an electrocardiogram.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Experiencing sudden left chest pain can be concerning, especially when it occurs multiple times and is accompanied by symptoms such as increased heart rate and discomfort during movement or deep breathing. Given the nature of your symptoms, it is essential to consider various potential causes, which can range from musculoskeletal issues to more serious cardiovascular concerns.
Firstly, one common cause of left chest pain is musculoskeletal pain, which can result from muscle strain or inflammation in the chest wall. This type of pain is often exacerbated by movement or deep breathing, as you described. Conditions such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can lead to sharp, localized pain that may mimic cardiac pain.
Another possibility is that your symptoms could be related to anxiety or panic attacks. These can manifest as chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. If your pain is associated with feelings of anxiety or stress, this could be a contributing factor.
However, it is crucial to rule out any cardiovascular issues, especially since you mentioned that your heart rate seems to increase during these episodes. Conditions such as angina or even myocardial infarction (heart attack) can present with left-sided chest pain, although they typically come with additional symptoms like shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain radiating to the arm, neck, or jaw. Given that you have experienced this pain multiple times, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
Additionally, gastrointestinal issues, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or esophageal spasms, can also cause chest pain that may be mistaken for cardiac pain. These conditions can cause discomfort that is often relieved by antacids or changes in position.
Considering your symptoms have recurred and have been ongoing for a longer duration this year, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may recommend diagnostic tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, or echocardiogram to assess your heart's health and rule out any serious conditions. Blood tests may also be conducted to check for markers of heart damage or other underlying issues.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your left chest pain, including musculoskeletal issues, anxiety, or gastrointestinal problems, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the exact cause. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management based on your specific symptoms and medical history. Do not hesitate to seek help, especially if the pain worsens or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms. Your health and peace of mind are paramount.
