Since childhood, I have experienced occasional sharp pain in the left chest?

Hello: Since I was in the first or second grade of elementary school, I have occasionally experienced sudden severe pain in my left chest.
Sometimes it feels like a tight, dull ache, and other times it is a sharp pain.
These episodes last for about a few seconds, not exceeding ten seconds.
It seems to have become more frequent as I have grown older.
I would like to inquire about the possible causes of this condition and whether I need to go to the hospital for an examination, as well as which department I should register with.
Thank you!

Ryan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/05

Hello, you may be experiencing mitral valve prolapse or autonomic nervous system issues.
Muscle nerve pain or growing pains are also possibilities.
It would be a good idea to visit a cardiologist for an evaluation.

Sudden left chest pain can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical help. Given your description of the pain being sharp, sometimes feeling like a pressure or tightness, and lasting only a few seconds, there are several possibilities to consider.

Potential Causes of Sudden Left Chest Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: One of the most common causes of chest pain, especially if it is sharp and localized, is musculoskeletal pain. This can occur due to muscle strain, inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum (costochondritis), or even a pinched nerve in the neck or upper back. If the pain worsens with movement or palpation, this is more likely the cause.

2. Gastrointestinal Problems: Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or esophageal spasms can cause chest pain that may be mistaken for heart-related issues. This type of pain is often associated with eating, lying down, or certain movements.

3. Cardiac Issues: While less likely given your age and the transient nature of the pain, it’s crucial to rule out cardiac causes, especially if there are risk factors such as family history, smoking, or high blood pressure. Conditions like angina or even a heart attack can present with chest pain, though they typically come with additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, or radiating pain to the arm or jaw.

4. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: Anxiety can manifest physically, leading to episodes of chest pain that may feel sharp or like pressure. These episodes can be brief and are often accompanied by feelings of panic, rapid heartbeat, or shortness of breath.

5. Pulmonary Issues: Conditions affecting the lungs, such as pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) or a pulmonary embolism, can also cause sudden chest pain. These conditions are usually accompanied by other symptoms like difficulty breathing or coughing.

When to Seek Medical Help
Given that your symptoms have been present since childhood and have become more frequent, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some guidelines on when to seek help:
- Immediate Attention: If you experience chest pain that lasts more than a few minutes, is severe, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty breathing, sweating, nausea, or pain radiating to the arm, back, or jaw, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

- Routine Evaluation: If the pain is brief and resolves quickly but has increased in frequency or intensity, it’s still important to see a doctor. A thorough evaluation can help rule out serious conditions.

Recommended Specialist
For your symptoms, starting with a visit to a primary care physician is a good idea. They can perform an initial assessment and may refer you to a cardiologist if they suspect a heart-related issue, or a pulmonologist for lung-related concerns. If musculoskeletal issues are suspected, a referral to an orthopedic specialist or a physiatrist may be appropriate.

Conclusion
While sudden left chest pain can arise from various causes, understanding the nature of your symptoms and seeking appropriate medical evaluation is crucial. It’s always better to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to chest pain. A healthcare professional can provide a comprehensive assessment and guide you toward the right treatment based on the underlying cause.
