Unusual Height Increase in Adulthood: What Could It Mean? - Orthopedics

Recently, I have suddenly started to grow taller over the past five to six years?

Hello: I personally enjoy playing basketball, and during the summer between seventh and eighth grade, I grew at least 10-15 centimeters, reaching a height of about 175 centimeters.
After entering the workforce, I would occasionally have health check-ups, and my height remained unchanged.
However, around the age of 35, my height suddenly increased to 176 cm.
I initially thought it was just a discrepancy in the height measurements at different hospitals, so I didn't pay much attention to it.
Since then, I have had annual health check-ups at the same hospital, with recorded heights of 177.8 cm, 178 cm, and 178.5 cm, and last year, my height was measured at 180 cm (my weight has also increased from 67 kg to 77 kg).
While I am happy to have reached my previous target height, I am concerned that I am still growing at my age.
Could this indicate any underlying health issues? It feels quite unusual (I feel like I am still growing taller because my clothes are gradually becoming smaller).

Perhaps it would be a good idea to test for any issues with growth hormone.

Unusual height increase in adulthood can be a perplexing phenomenon, especially when it occurs after the typical growth periods of adolescence. In most individuals, growth plates, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue at the ends of long bones, close after puberty, marking the end of height increase. For males, this typically occurs around the ages of 16 to 18, while females usually stop growing a bit earlier. However, there are several factors that could contribute to continued height increase in adulthood, and it is essential to understand these to assess whether there might be an underlying medical condition.

Firstly, one possible explanation for an unusual increase in height in adulthood is the presence of a growth hormone excess. This can occur due to a benign tumor of the pituitary gland, known as an adenoma, which secretes excess growth hormone. This condition can lead to acromegaly, characterized by the enlargement of bones and tissues, particularly in the hands, feet, and face. While acromegaly is more commonly associated with noticeable changes in physical appearance, it can also lead to an increase in height if growth plates have not fully closed. In your case, if you are experiencing a gradual increase in height along with other symptoms such as changes in shoe size or hand size, it would be prudent to consult an endocrinologist for a thorough evaluation, including hormone level testing and possibly imaging studies of the pituitary gland.

Another potential cause of height increase in adulthood could be related to spinal changes. Conditions such as spinal disc degeneration or compression can sometimes lead to a temporary increase in height due to improved posture or spinal alignment. This is particularly relevant if you have engaged in activities that promote spinal health, such as stretching, yoga, or certain sports like basketball, which can enhance flexibility and posture.

Additionally, factors such as weight changes can also influence perceived height. As you mentioned, your weight has increased from 67 kg to 77 kg. Weight gain can sometimes compress the spine, leading to a temporary decrease in height, and subsequent weight loss or changes in body composition can result in a slight increase in height due to decompression of the spine.

It is also worth noting that variations in measurement techniques and equipment can lead to discrepancies in reported height. Different clinics may use different measuring devices, and factors such as time of day (height can vary slightly throughout the day due to spinal compression) and measurement technique can all contribute to variations in height readings.

In conclusion, while a gradual increase in height in adulthood can be concerning, it is essential to consider the context and any accompanying symptoms. If you are experiencing significant changes in height, especially if they are accompanied by other physical changes or symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. An endocrinologist can conduct the necessary tests to determine if there is an underlying hormonal imbalance or other medical condition that needs to be addressed. Regular monitoring and a proactive approach to your health will help ensure that any potential issues are identified and managed appropriately.

Understanding Growth: Why Am I Only Growing 3-4 cm a Year?

Hello, I would like to ask the doctor why, even though I am still growing and eating a nutritious diet, my height only increases by 3 to 4 centimeters a year. Could it be due to a slower metabolism or a lack of exercise? Please help me analyze this. Thank you.

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
Normal height increase is dependent on the growth plates of the bones, which typically close around the age of 16. Therefore, after the age of 16, individuals will not experience any further height increase. This is due to human physiological structure, and there are no alternati...
