Can Shintong coated tablets be used for contraception?

Recently, I experienced irregular menstrual cycles and consulted a gynecologist who prescribed me a medication called Xintong (信通) coated tablets to be taken once a day for 21 days.
I know that oral contraceptives can also be used to regulate menstrual cycles, but I forgot to ask the doctor whether the prescribed medication has contraceptive properties.
Therefore, I did some online research (though not extensively) and mistakenly believed that this medication was also an oral contraceptive.
After taking the medication for more than two weeks, I had unprotected sexual intercourse (but without ejaculation).
Later, I decided to investigate further and discovered that Xintong is primarily a menstrual regulation medication and not the same as a contraceptive pill.
I would like to ask the doctor whether this medication has any contraceptive effects or if it is solely for regulating the menstrual cycle.
Does having unprotected sexual intercourse during this time increase the risk of pregnancy? Additionally, I am currently halfway through my second month of taking the medication, but today I noticed slight bleeding when I went to the bathroom.
Is this normal? (I have been taking it consistently every day.)

Hello, the main concern is menstrual regulation, and the contraceptive effect is poor, so caution is advised.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Xintong Coated Tablets, known generically as "Xintong," are primarily prescribed for menstrual regulation and are not classified as a contraceptive pill. While some hormonal medications can serve dual purposes—regulating menstrual cycles and providing contraception—Xintong is not specifically designed for birth control. It is essential to understand the distinction between these two types of medications.

When taken as directed, Xintong can help manage irregular menstrual cycles by providing hormonal support. However, it does not guarantee contraceptive protection. If you have been taking Xintong for over two weeks and have had unprotected intercourse, there is a possibility of pregnancy, especially if the medication is not intended for contraception. The effectiveness of any hormonal medication in preventing pregnancy can vary based on the specific formulation and the timing of administration.

In terms of the slight bleeding you experienced, it is not uncommon for individuals taking hormonal medications to experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting, especially during the initial months of use. This can occur as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes induced by the medication. However, if the bleeding is heavy, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

To summarize, Xintong Coated Tablets are primarily for menstrual regulation and are not a reliable form of birth control. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy due to unprotected intercourse while taking this medication, it is recommended to take a home pregnancy test or consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance. Additionally, if you are seeking reliable contraception, discussing alternative options with your doctor would be beneficial. There are various contraceptive methods available, including hormonal pills specifically designed for birth control, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and barrier methods, among others.

In conclusion, while Xintong may help regulate your menstrual cycle, it should not be relied upon as a contraceptive method. If you have any further questions or concerns regarding your medication or reproductive health, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.
