Postoperative care after circumcision for glans issues?
Today is the fourth day after my circumcision surgery.
The pain has decreased significantly, but the wound area is itchy.
I'm not sure if it's due to friction, but the glans, which was originally pink, has become a bit wrinkled, and there is a dark spot on the back.
Is this normal?

Hello: It is very common to experience this phenomenon after surgery.
You just need to take good care of the wound, maintain a light diet, and minimize erections.
It should improve in about 10-14 days.
If you have a follow-up appointment, please make sure to attend on time.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing complications. It is common to experience some discomfort, itching, and changes in the appearance of the glans (the head of the penis) after the procedure. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what to expect and how to care for yourself during the recovery phase.
Understanding Changes in the Glans After Circumcision
1. Itching and Discomfort: Itching is a normal part of the healing process as the skin begins to regenerate. However, if the itching becomes severe or is accompanied by redness, swelling, or discharge, it may indicate an infection or an allergic reaction to the dressing or ointment used.
2. Appearance of the Glans: After circumcision, the glans may appear different than before. It is common for the glans to look wrinkled or dry as it adjusts to being exposed. The skin on the glans is sensitive and may take time to adapt to its new environment. The initial pinkish hue may also change to a darker color, which can be normal as the healing progresses.
3. Black Spots: The presence of a black spot on the glans can be concerning, but it may simply be a result of bruising or scabbing as the area heals. If the black area is not painful and does not show signs of infection (such as increased redness, warmth, or pus), it may not be a cause for alarm. However, if you notice any changes or if it persists, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
Post-Circumcision Care Tips
1. Keep the Area Clean: Gently clean the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area, as this can irritate the sensitive skin.
2. Moisturize: Applying a thin layer of a recommended ointment (such as petroleum jelly) can help keep the area moist and reduce itching. This can also protect the glans from friction with clothing.
3. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to minimize friction against the glans. Avoid activities that may cause excessive movement or pressure on the area, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until fully healed.
4. Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye out for symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, redness, or discharge. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
5. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon or urologist. They can assess the healing process and address any concerns you may have.
6. Patience is Key: Healing from circumcision can take several weeks. It is essential to be patient and allow your body the time it needs to heal properly.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If you experience any of the following, it is important to seek medical attention:
- Severe pain that does not improve with over-the-counter pain relief.
- Signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or pus-like discharge.
- Persistent or worsening discoloration of the glans.
- Any unusual changes in the appearance of the surgical site that cause concern.
In conclusion, while some changes in the appearance of the glans and mild itching are normal after circumcision, it is essential to monitor your recovery closely. If you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance as you navigate the healing process.
