Urgency After Catheterization: Is It Normal? - Urology

Urinary issues?

I have a constant urge to urinate, and even after catheterization, I still feel a strong urge.
I asked the doctor, and he said this is normal.
Is it because the catheterization wasn't thorough? Do I need to undergo catheterization again? Right now, I'm just standing in the bathroom, dripping little by little, which is very inconvenient.

Hello: There is no need for immediate action.
If the urge to urinate has recently developed, it is important to investigate the cause.
However, if this has been occurring for many years and is worsening, it may indicate a bladder issue.
It is also important to consider whether there has been any use of ketamine, as this medication can potentially lead to bladder complications.
If the frequent urge to urinate occurs only intermittently, it may be influenced by psychological factors.
In summary, there are many potential causes for frequent urination.
If it affects your daily life, it is advisable to consult a urologist at a major hospital, where the physician will arrange appropriate examinations.
Wishing you good health.

After catheterization, experiencing a persistent urge to urinate is a common phenomenon and can be attributed to several factors. It is important to understand the underlying reasons for this sensation and when it might be necessary to seek further medical attention.

Firstly, catheterization can irritate the bladder and urethra, leading to a feeling of urgency even after the catheter has been removed. This irritation can cause the bladder to become hyperactive, resulting in frequent urges to urinate. The bladder is a muscular organ that can sometimes react to trauma or irritation by contracting more frequently than normal, which is often referred to as "bladder irritability." This condition can be temporary and may resolve on its own as the bladder heals from the irritation caused by the catheter.

Secondly, if the catheterization was performed due to urinary retention or obstruction, the sensation of urgency may persist as the bladder adjusts to its normal function. After a period of retention, the bladder may need time to regain its normal capacity and function, which can lead to feelings of urgency even when the bladder is not full.

In some cases, if the catheterization was not performed effectively or if there are residual urine volumes left in the bladder, this can also contribute to the sensation of urgency. If the bladder does not empty completely, it may signal the brain that it is full, leading to the urge to urinate. However, if the doctor has assessed the situation and indicated that the catheterization was successful, it is less likely that residual urine is the cause.

If the urgency is accompanied by pain, discomfort, or difficulty urinating, it may indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI) or other complications. Symptoms of a UTI can include burning during urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and fever. If any of these symptoms are present, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

Regarding the need for re-catheterization, it is generally not necessary unless there are specific concerns about incomplete bladder emptying or if the urgency is severe and persistent. If the sensation of urgency continues to be bothersome or if there are any other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with a healthcare provider. They may perform a bladder scan to assess for residual urine or consider other diagnostic tests to rule out complications.

In summary, while it is common to experience a sense of urgency after catheterization due to irritation or adjustment of the bladder, it is essential to monitor the situation. If the urgency persists or worsens, or if there are additional symptoms, seeking further medical evaluation is advisable. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have, as they can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation.
