Post-appendectomy
Hello, Dr.
Hsu.
On March 20th, I was diagnosed with appendicitis in the emergency department and immediately scheduled for surgery.
I underwent traditional surgery, and the attending physician mentioned that both the surgery and recovery were going well.
I was discharged home on March 24th (Wednesday).
However, for the past three days at home, I have been experiencing loose stools.
My diet has been low in oil and light, and I have been eating a lot of fruits.
I would like to ask if this bowel movement situation is normal.
Although it is not diarrhea in the watery sense, the stools are not formed and are quite loose and fragmented.
Should I consider returning for an earlier follow-up? Additionally, I would like to know if it is okay to drink tea and coffee post-surgery.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Mr. Li, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/03/26
Dr. Xu Kaixi reply Surgery
Postoperative diarrhea following gastrointestinal surgery may be attributed not only to the temporary impact on gastrointestinal function caused by the surgery itself but also to medications and dietary habits.
In theory, this condition should improve over time.
Beverages like tea and coffee, which contain caffeine, may stimulate gastrointestinal motility and contribute to diarrhea.

After an appendectomy, it is common for patients to experience various digestive changes as their body adjusts to the surgery and the healing process. In your case, experiencing loose stools or diarrhea-like symptoms for a few days post-surgery can be attributed to several factors, including the effects of anesthesia, changes in diet, and the body's response to the surgical procedure itself.
Understanding Post-Appendectomy Digestive Changes
1. Anesthesia Effects: The anesthesia used during surgery can temporarily affect your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It may slow down or speed up bowel movements, leading to changes in stool consistency.
2. Dietary Changes: After surgery, many patients are advised to follow a bland diet to ease the digestive system back into normal function. If you have recently increased your intake of fruits and other fiber-rich foods, this could also contribute to looser stools. While fiber is essential for digestive health, a sudden increase can sometimes lead to changes in bowel habits.
3. Post-Surgical Recovery: The body is in a healing state after surgery, which can affect digestion. Stress on the body from surgery can lead to temporary changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea or loose stools.
4. Infection or Complications: While less common, it is essential to monitor for signs of infection or complications, such as fever, severe abdominal pain, or persistent diarrhea. If your symptoms worsen or do not improve, it is advisable to consult your physician.
Recommendations
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your bowel movements and any other symptoms you may experience. If the loose stools persist beyond a week or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
- Dietary Adjustments: Continue to eat a balanced diet, but consider moderating your intake of high-fiber foods temporarily until your bowel movements normalize. You might also want to avoid dairy products for a few days, as they can sometimes exacerbate diarrhea.
- Hydration: Ensure you stay well-hydrated, especially if you are experiencing loose stools. Drinking clear fluids is essential to prevent dehydration.
- Caffeine Consumption: Regarding your question about drinking tea and coffee post-surgery, moderate consumption is generally acceptable unless your doctor has advised otherwise. However, caffeine can sometimes irritate the stomach, so it may be best to limit intake until you feel more stable.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If you experience any of the following, you should contact your healthcare provider:
- Persistent diarrhea lasting more than a week.
- Severe abdominal pain or cramping.
- Fever or chills.
- Signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, dry mouth, or reduced urine output).
- Any other unusual symptoms that concern you.
In summary, while experiencing loose stools after an appendectomy can be common, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and maintain communication with your healthcare provider. If you have any doubts or if your condition does not improve, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and recovery are paramount, and your physician can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.
