Menstrual regulation drugs, drug interactions?

The last menstrual period was from March 6 to March 10, with a cycle of approximately 28 days, so the next period is expected on April 2.
If I start taking Norina Tablets 5mg from March 29, following the pharmacist's instructions to take one tablet a day, will it be effective in time? If there is already slight bleeding, can I still take it? I have endometriosis and previously took Danazol for a long time, but stopped two months ago.
What are the differences in effects between these two medications? Will there be any impact? What would be the effects of taking both medications simultaneously on pregnancy?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/03/31

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, if you take the medication to delay your period and your menstruation starts in the middle of the treatment, you should stop taking the medication.
If your period does not come, continue taking the medication until it arrives.
The medication for endometriosis is not the same as the period-delaying medication; it works by suppressing hormones, which can lead to a condition similar to amenorrhea, and of course, it will prevent pregnancy.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the use of Norina Tablets (Norethisterone) in the context of endometriosis and menstrual irregularities, it’s essential to understand both the medication's purpose and its interactions with other treatments. Norina is primarily used to regulate menstrual cycles and can be effective in treating conditions like amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) or irregular periods. It works by mimicking the effects of progesterone, a hormone that plays a crucial role in the menstrual cycle.

In your case, if your last menstrual period was from March 6 to March 10, and you plan to start taking Norina on March 29, you may be able to influence your cycle. However, it's important to note that Norina is not a guaranteed method to induce menstruation immediately. Typically, if taken as directed, you might expect your period to occur within a week after completing the course of the medication. The timing can vary based on individual hormonal responses and the underlying condition being treated.

If you are experiencing light bleeding before starting Norina, it is generally advisable to consult your healthcare provider. If menstruation has begun, continuing with Norina may not be necessary, as the medication is intended to regulate cycles rather than induce bleeding when it has already started.
Regarding your previous use of a medication for endometriosis, such as Danazol or other hormonal treatments, it’s crucial to understand the differences. Medications like Danazol suppress the growth of endometrial tissue and can lead to a state similar to menopause, which may prevent menstruation altogether. In contrast, Norina is used to manage and regulate menstrual cycles rather than suppress them. Therefore, using both medications simultaneously without medical supervision could lead to hormonal imbalances or unexpected side effects.

As for the potential impact on fertility, using Norina or similar hormonal treatments typically does not have a long-term negative effect on your ability to conceive. However, if you have been trying to conceive for an extended period without success, it may be prudent to discuss fertility evaluations with your healthcare provider. They can assess any underlying issues that may be affecting your ability to become pregnant.

In summary, while Norina can help regulate your menstrual cycle, it is essential to follow your healthcare provider's guidance regarding its use, especially in the context of endometriosis. If you have any concerns about interactions with other medications or the effects on your fertility, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can provide the most accurate information based on your medical history and current health status.
