There is a hard mass in the lower left abdomen?

Hello Dr.
Lin, I am 37 years old and unmarried.
I usually experience vaginal discharge, but in the past two weeks, the discharge has changed to a brownish color.
I feel a hard lump in my lower left abdomen, and sometimes when I lie down and turn over, the lump spasms.
This phenomenon has been occurring for over a year.

1.
Brown vaginal discharge is likely a small amount of bleeding mixed with leukorrhea, which may indicate a condition affecting the lower reproductive tract (cervix, vagina).

2.
For lesions of the upper reproductive tract (endometrium), it is recommended to visit a gynecologist for a pelvic examination, Pap smear, and ultrasound.

3.
If there is a sensation of a mass in the left lower abdomen, an ultrasound examination by a gynecologist is advised.

More Info

Hello! Based on your symptoms and the information you've provided, it sounds like you are experiencing a combination of gynecological and possibly gastrointestinal issues. The presence of a hard lump in the left lower abdomen, along with a change in the color of your discharge to a brownish hue, warrants further investigation.

Firstly, the change in discharge color can be attributed to several factors. Brown discharge often indicates old blood, which could be a result of various conditions, including hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, or even the beginning of menstruation. However, if this change persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, it could indicate a more serious issue, such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

The hard lump you are feeling in your left lower abdomen could be related to several conditions. It may be a benign cyst, such as an ovarian cyst, which can sometimes cause discomfort or a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen. Alternatively, it could be related to gastrointestinal issues, such as diverticulitis, especially if you have a history of constipation or irregular bowel movements. Given your symptoms of a hard lump and the spasms you experience when lying down, it is essential to consider both gynecological and gastrointestinal evaluations.

Since you have been experiencing these symptoms for over a year, it is crucial to follow up with a healthcare provider who can perform a thorough examination. Here are some steps you might consider taking:
1. Consult a Gynecologist: Given the changes in your discharge and the presence of a hard lump, a gynecological evaluation is essential. The doctor may perform a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or other imaging studies to assess the ovaries and uterus for any abnormalities.

2. Gastroenterological Evaluation: If the gynecological evaluation does not reveal any issues, it may be beneficial to consult a gastroenterologist. They can assess for conditions such as diverticulitis or other gastrointestinal disorders that may be causing the lump and discomfort.

3. Imaging Studies: Depending on the findings from your initial consultations, imaging studies such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan may be warranted. These tests can provide detailed information about the structures in your abdomen and help identify any abnormalities.

4. Blood Tests: Blood tests can also be helpful in assessing for infections, inflammation, or hormonal imbalances that may be contributing to your symptoms.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a detailed record of your symptoms, including any changes in your discharge, pain levels, and any other associated symptoms. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in making an accurate diagnosis.

In summary, the combination of brown discharge and a hard lump in the left lower abdomen is concerning and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. It is essential to approach this situation with a comprehensive evaluation that considers both gynecological and gastrointestinal perspectives. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve your quality of life and address any underlying issues effectively. Please make sure to seek medical attention promptly to address your symptoms and concerns.
