Root canal treatment
Hello, doctor.
My right front tooth had a root canal last September, and I haven't touched that tooth since then.
Now, I feel weak when biting down, and sometimes there is a slight throbbing pain.
The next day when I wake up, the tooth feels normal again.
Is this normal?

Experiencing discomfort or pain after a root canal treatment can be concerning, and it's important to understand what might be happening with your tooth. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing some mild symptoms, such as a feeling of pressure or slight pain in your right front tooth, especially when biting down. While it is not uncommon to have some residual discomfort after a root canal, especially in the first few weeks, the nature and duration of your symptoms can provide important clues about your dental health.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that root canal treatment involves the removal of the tooth's nerve and pulp, which can lead to inflammation in the surrounding tissues. This inflammation can sometimes cause lingering discomfort, especially if the tooth was previously infected. The fact that you are feeling some pressure or pain when biting down could indicate that there is still some inflammation present, or it could be related to the way your bite aligns with that tooth.
In many cases, mild discomfort can be expected for a few days to a couple of weeks after the procedure. However, if you are experiencing pain that is persistent or worsening, it may be a sign that further evaluation is needed. Here are a few potential reasons for your symptoms:
1. Residual Inflammation: After a root canal, the tissues around the tooth can remain inflamed for some time. This inflammation can cause sensitivity or a feeling of pressure, especially when chewing.
2. Incomplete Cleaning: If the root canal was not entirely successful in removing all the infected tissue or if there are complex root canal systems that were not adequately treated, this could lead to ongoing discomfort.
3. Bite Issues: Sometimes, after a root canal, the way your teeth come together (your occlusion) can change. If the treated tooth is hitting harder than the surrounding teeth when you bite down, it can cause discomfort.
4. Cracked Tooth Syndrome: If there is a crack in the tooth that was not detected during the root canal treatment, it could lead to pain when biting down.
5. Other Dental Issues: It’s also possible that other dental problems, such as gum disease or issues with adjacent teeth, could be contributing to your discomfort.
Given that your symptoms seem to fluctuate—being more pronounced at times and then subsiding—it would be wise to consult with your dentist or an endodontist (a specialist in root canal treatments). They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including X-rays, to determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
In terms of what you can do in the meantime, here are a few suggestions:
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort. However, if the pain persists despite medication, it’s crucial to seek professional advice.
- Avoid Hard Foods: Until you have a clearer understanding of the issue, try to avoid biting down on hard foods with that tooth to prevent exacerbating any potential problems.
- Follow-Up Appointment: Schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may want to conduct a bite adjustment or further imaging to assess the situation.
In conclusion, while some mild discomfort after a root canal can be normal, persistent or fluctuating pain warrants further investigation. Your dental health is important, and addressing any concerns early can help prevent more significant issues down the line.
