Regarding the wrinkling of the glans?

Hello, recently when I was showering, I noticed that the glans is not as smooth as before; it feels a bit wrinkled and has a whitish appearance.
I previously had eczema (which I believe was a fungal infection) and applied a medication prescribed by my doctor, which is betamethasone, on my penis and glans.
I'm wondering if this could be the cause, or if it could be a fungal infection, or if it's due to frequent masturbation.
Thank you.

It does sound like a fungal infection.
The reasons you mentioned are all possible, but the main factor is that summer has arrived, which creates a warm and humid environment conducive to fungal infections.

Understanding changes in the appearance of the glans penis, such as wrinkling or the presence of white patches, can be concerning and may arise from various causes. In your case, you mentioned a history of eczema and potential fungal infection, as well as the use of betamethasone, a topical corticosteroid. Let’s explore these factors in detail.

1. Wrinkling of the Glans: The glans penis can appear wrinkled for several reasons. One common cause is dryness, which can occur due to a lack of moisture or irritation. This can be exacerbated by the use of topical medications like betamethasone, which can thin the skin over time, leading to a less smooth appearance. Additionally, frequent masturbation can lead to temporary changes in skin texture due to friction.

2. White Patches: The presence of white patches on the glans could indicate several conditions. One possibility is a fungal infection, such as candidiasis (thrush), which is common in warm, moist areas of the body. Other potential causes include lichen sclerosus, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can affect the genital area, or even a reaction to the topical medication you have been using.
3. Topical Steroid Use: Betamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that can be effective for treating inflammatory skin conditions, but prolonged use, especially on sensitive areas like the genitalia, can lead to skin thinning and other side effects. If you have been using it frequently or for an extended period, it may contribute to the changes you are observing.

4. Frequency of Masturbation: While frequent masturbation itself is not harmful, it can lead to temporary changes in the skin due to friction. If you notice that the wrinkling or irritation worsens after masturbation, it may be worth considering reducing the frequency or using lubrication to minimize friction.

Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to consult a urologist or dermatologist who specializes in genital skin conditions. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend a skin scraping or culture to determine if a fungal infection is present.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that the betamethasone is contributing to your symptoms, discuss with your doctor about tapering off the medication or switching to a less potent alternative. Avoid using any other topical products that may irritate the skin.

- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. If you are prone to fungal infections, consider using antifungal powders or creams as a preventive measure, but only after consulting with a healthcare provider.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including itching, burning, or discharge. This information will be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing and treating your condition.

- Lifestyle Adjustments: If you find that masturbation is contributing to irritation, consider adjusting your habits. Using lubrication can help reduce friction and irritation.

In summary, the changes you are experiencing could be due to a combination of factors, including the use of topical steroids, potential fungal infections, and friction from masturbation. A healthcare provider can help clarify the diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options. Your health and comfort are paramount, so seeking professional advice is the best course of action.
