Concerns About Wakamoto: Safety and Effects on Health - Internal Medicine

Dietary Concerns

I have suffered from irritable bowel syndrome since a young age, and my weight has always been around 50 kg.
I am 178 cm tall.
After a minor surgery for a sebaceous cyst last year, I took antibiotics, which worsened my condition and also led to an anal fissure.
Later, I followed my doctor's advice and tried Wakamoto, and while taking it, my symptoms disappeared for two to three months.
Unexpectedly, my weight increased to 57 kg, and I finally gained some muscle.
I would like to ask the doctor about the ingredients in this medication, which contains brewer's yeast.
Although I have searched extensively and found that it is considered a safe food, I am concerned if there are any studies indicating that it could harm the pancreas like alcohol does.
I am personally worried about the long-term side effects of taking it.

Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/05/06

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, beer yeast is essentially a type of yeast that does not contain alcohol, so it does not harm the pancreas.
Wakamoto is a probiotic component, similar to many probiotic products available on the market, used for gut health.
As long as there are no underlying immune deficiency issues, it is generally considered safe.
Thank you for your question.

Wakamoto, which contains brewer's yeast, is often marketed as a dietary supplement aimed at improving gut health and overall well-being. It is important to clarify that brewer's yeast itself does not contain alcohol, and therefore, it does not pose the same risks to the pancreas as alcoholic beverages do. The concerns regarding the safety and potential side effects of long-term use of Wakamoto or similar products are valid, especially for individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Brewer's yeast is a rich source of B vitamins, protein, and minerals, and it is commonly used as a probiotic to support digestive health. Many people report positive effects from using such supplements, including improved digestion and weight management, as you have experienced. In your case, it seems that Wakamoto has helped alleviate symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and has contributed to weight gain and muscle development, which is a positive outcome.

However, like any supplement, there are potential side effects and considerations for long-term use. Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea, especially when first starting the supplement. It is also essential to consider any allergies or sensitivities to yeast products, as they can trigger allergic reactions in some people.

Regarding your concern about the potential for brewer's yeast to harm the pancreas, current research does not support the idea that brewer's yeast has any detrimental effects on pancreatic health. The primary concern with pancreatic health arises from excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to pancreatitis and other serious conditions. Since brewer's yeast does not contain alcohol, it is generally considered safe for most individuals, provided they do not have specific contraindications.

If you have a history of pancreatitis or other pancreatic disorders, it is wise to consult with a healthcare professional before continuing any supplement regimen. Additionally, if you are taking other medications or have underlying health conditions, it is crucial to discuss these with your doctor to avoid any potential interactions.

In summary, Wakamoto and similar brewer's yeast supplements can be beneficial for many individuals, particularly for those dealing with digestive issues. While they are generally considered safe, it is essential to monitor your body's response and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any concerns, especially regarding long-term use. Always prioritize a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, as these are the most effective ways to maintain overall health and well-being.
