Frequent urination issues?
Doctor, I live in Australia, and it's currently autumn.
It suddenly became very cold here two days ago.
The night before last, just before going to bed, I felt the urge to urinate again only ten minutes after I had just gone.
I felt discomfort in my urethra and kept delaying until midnight when I finally relaxed and fell asleep.
I slept through the night without waking up to urinate.
However, last night, the same thing happened before bed, and in the morning, I felt a bit uncomfortable, especially in the morning and afternoon when it's colder.
But it’s not as intense as before sleeping at night.
I don’t experience frequent urination, and I don’t feel it when I’m busy.
There’s no pain or burning sensation, and the urine color is normal.
I also sleep well during my afternoon nap; it’s just before going to bed at night that I have this issue.
I’m not sure if this is prostatitis, urethritis, or if it’s due to anxiety.
Thank you.

Hello: This facility is unable to provide a diagnosis and may require urine tests and other evaluations.
However, I personally believe that if there is a significant level of inflammation, symptoms should not be intermittent.
Therefore, I recommend the following: 1) Maintain balanced hydration; 2) Limit beverage intake, especially alcohol; 3) Avoid spicy foods and increase the intake of fruits and vegetables; 4) Avoid prolonged sitting for several hours; make sure to get up and move around, aiming for at least 30 minutes of gentle walking each day; 5) If there are activities that put pressure on the perineum, such as cycling, try to minimize them.
If you notice improvement within 2-3 days, it is likely not due to inflammation.
Wishing you good health.
P.S.
Have you recently started any new medications? Medications can also have an impact, and it’s worth checking if your blood sugar levels are elevated.

More Info
Frequent urination can be a concerning symptom for many men, and it can arise from various underlying causes. In your case, it seems that the discomfort and urgency you experience primarily occur in the evening and are exacerbated by colder temperatures. Let's break down some potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms.
Possible Causes of Frequent Urination
1. Prostatitis: This is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can lead to urinary symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and discomfort. Chronic prostatitis can sometimes present with vague symptoms that are not always easy to diagnose. If you suspect this, it would be wise to consult a urologist for a thorough evaluation.
2. Bladder Irritation: Conditions such as interstitial cystitis or bladder overactivity can cause similar symptoms. These conditions often lead to a frequent urge to urinate, even when the bladder is not full. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate these symptoms, leading to a cycle of discomfort.
3. Cold Weather Effects: As you noted, the onset of colder weather can influence urinary habits. Cold temperatures can cause the bladder to contract more, leading to increased urgency. This is a physiological response that can affect many individuals.
4. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress can significantly impact urinary habits. If you find that your symptoms are more pronounced during stressful times or when you are anticipating a situation (like going to bed), this could indicate a psychological component. Relaxation techniques or cognitive behavioral therapy may help alleviate these symptoms.
5. Diet and Hydration: While you mentioned that your urine color is normal and you do not experience pain or burning, it’s essential to consider your fluid intake and dietary habits. Certain foods and beverages, especially caffeine and alcohol, can irritate the bladder and lead to increased frequency.
Recommendations
1. Consult a Urologist: Given your symptoms, it would be beneficial to see a urologist. They can perform tests such as a urinalysis, ultrasound, or even a cystoscopy to rule out any underlying conditions like prostatitis or bladder issues.
2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your urinary habits, noting when you feel the urge to urinate, any associated discomfort, and environmental factors (like temperature). This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.
3. Relaxation Techniques: If anxiety is a contributing factor, consider incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga into your routine. These practices can help reduce stress and may alleviate some of the urgency you feel.
4. Stay Warm: Since you mentioned that your symptoms seem to worsen in colder weather, ensure that you keep warm, especially in the evenings. This might help reduce the frequency of your symptoms.
5. Hydration Management: Pay attention to your hydration levels throughout the day. While it’s essential to stay hydrated, try to avoid excessive fluid intake right before bed to minimize nighttime discomfort.
Conclusion
Frequent urination can stem from a variety of causes, including physiological, psychological, and environmental factors. Your symptoms, particularly the discomfort before sleep and the influence of colder weather, suggest that a multifaceted approach may be necessary. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with a clearer understanding of your condition and appropriate treatment options. Remember, addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of your symptoms is crucial for effective management.
