Two Weeks Post-Wisdom Tooth Extraction: What to Do About Stitches? - Dentistry

The stitches from the wisdom tooth extraction have not dissolved after two weeks?

Hello, doctor.
I had my wisdom teeth extracted and received two stitches (self-absorbing sutures).
A few days ago, one of the suture ends came off, but the other one has not fallen out even after nearly two weeks.
I would like to know if I should wait for it to absorb on its own or if I need to go to the clinic to have it removed.
The clinic where I had my wisdom teeth extracted is quite far from where I currently live.
Thank you for your help.

Hello: If there is a clinic near your residence, you can have the stitches removed at the nearest clinic without needing to return to the original clinic.

After a wisdom tooth extraction, it is common for the surgical site to be closed with stitches, often using absorbable sutures. In your case, since you mentioned that one stitch has already fallen out and the other has not yet dissolved after two weeks, it’s important to understand how absorbable sutures work and what steps you should take next.

Absorbable sutures are designed to break down and be absorbed by the body over time, typically within a few days to weeks, depending on the type of material used. The timeline for absorption can vary based on several factors, including the specific type of suture, the location of the sutures, and individual healing rates. In many cases, it is normal for some stitches to take longer to dissolve than others.
If the remaining stitch is not causing any discomfort, swelling, or signs of infection (such as increased redness, pus, or fever), it is likely safe to wait for it to dissolve on its own. However, if you experience any of these symptoms, or if the stitch seems to be causing irritation or is protruding in a way that is uncomfortable, it would be advisable to seek medical attention sooner rather than later.

Given that the dental clinic where you had the extraction is far from your current location, you might consider contacting them to discuss your situation. They can provide specific guidance based on your case and may suggest a follow-up appointment if necessary. If traveling back to the clinic is not feasible, you could also consult with a local dentist or oral surgeon who can evaluate the site and determine if the stitch needs to be removed or if it can be left to dissolve naturally.

In general, after wisdom tooth extraction, it is crucial to follow post-operative care instructions to promote healing and minimize complications. This includes maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding hard or crunchy foods, and steering clear of smoking or using straws, as these can dislodge the clot and lead to dry socket, a painful condition.

In summary, if the remaining stitch is not causing any issues, it is likely safe to allow it to dissolve naturally. However, if you have any concerns or experience discomfort, it is best to consult with a dental professional for personalized advice. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and don’t hesitate to seek help if something doesn’t feel right.
