Itching and swelling of the foreskin?
Hello, Dr.
Du:
I have been experiencing itching at the tip of my foreskin and on my scrotum for the past few days.
However, I can still retract the foreskin normally for cleaning.
The itching sensation becomes more pronounced when water hits it during showering.
I’m not sure if I’ve been scratching due to the itch, but currently, the tip of my foreskin is swollen.
Additionally, I experience some itching after wiping my anus following a bowel movement, but it is not persistent.
I have been cleaning with warm water and have not used soap or any irritating products.
Is there a possibility of self-healing? Or can I purchase related medications for treatment? Given the current severity of the pandemic, I am unsure if it is appropriate to seek medical attention.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hello: This facility cannot provide medication references, but it is important that underwear is not tight and must be dried after washing.
If itching persists, you should seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Itchy and swollen foreskin, along with associated symptoms like itching in the scrotum and anal area, can be concerning and uncomfortable. Understanding the potential causes and remedies for these symptoms is essential for effective management.
Causes of Itchy and Swollen Foreskin
1. Infections: One of the most common causes of itching and swelling in the genital area is an infection. This could be a yeast infection, bacterial infection, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or gonorrhea. Yeast infections, in particular, can cause significant itching and irritation.
2. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis can occur due to irritation from soaps, detergents, or even certain fabrics. Allergic reactions to personal care products or latex condoms can also lead to similar symptoms.
3. Poor Hygiene: Inadequate cleaning can lead to the accumulation of smegma, a substance that can irritate the skin and cause itching and swelling.
4. Phimosis: This condition occurs when the foreskin cannot be easily retracted over the glans (the head of the penis), which can lead to irritation and inflammation.
5. Skin Conditions: Conditions like psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and swelling.
Remedies and Treatment Options
1. Hygiene: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Gently clean the area with warm water daily. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may irritate the skin.
2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter antifungal creams can be effective if a yeast infection is suspected. Hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching, but it should be used sparingly and not for prolonged periods without medical advice.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants, such as scented soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents. Wearing loose-fitting, breathable underwear can also help reduce irritation.
4. Antihistamines: If the itching is severe, oral antihistamines may provide relief from itching and discomfort.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend tests to identify any underlying infections or conditions. Given the current pandemic situation, many healthcare providers offer telehealth services, which can be a convenient option for initial consultations.
Self-Healing Possibility
While some mild cases of irritation may resolve on their own with improved hygiene and avoidance of irritants, persistent symptoms, especially those accompanied by swelling, should not be ignored. Self-diagnosing and treating without professional guidance can lead to complications, especially if an infection is present.
Conclusion
In summary, itchy and swollen foreskin can arise from various causes, including infections, dermatitis, and hygiene issues. While there are home remedies and over-the-counter treatments available, it is crucial to monitor the symptoms closely. If the condition does not improve or if you experience additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or fever, seeking medical attention is advisable. Your health and comfort are paramount, and a healthcare provider can offer tailored advice and treatment options to address your specific situation.
