Hymenal bleeding
Hello doctor, I had my first sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on May 15th, and afterwards I noticed bleeding.
Initially, it was quite heavy, but over the next few days it has been intermittent, sometimes bleeding and sometimes not.
As of May 19th, I am still experiencing bleeding.
I have been using sanitary pads during this time.
What should I do? Thank you.

Dear Sir/Madam,
The bleeding from the rupture of the hymen during first sexual intercourse may be similar to heavy menstrual bleeding.
If the bleeding continues heavily without decreasing, there is a concern about the rupture of small blood vessels, and it is advisable to seek treatment from a gynecologist.

More Info
Experiencing bleeding after your first sexual encounter can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and how to manage the situation. Based on the information you've provided, it seems that you may be dealing with a common issue related to first-time sexual experiences, particularly if there was any degree of force or if you were not fully aroused or relaxed during the encounter.
Firstly, it's essential to recognize that bleeding after first sexual intercourse can occur for several reasons. The most common cause is the tearing of the hymen, a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening. This can happen during penetration or even during vigorous external stimulation. If the hymen is stretched or torn, it can lead to some bleeding, which may be bright red initially and then change to a darker color as it heals.
In your case, since you mentioned that the bleeding has been intermittent and has continued for several days, it is advisable to monitor the situation closely. Here are some steps you can take to manage the bleeding:
1. Rest and Avoid Further Irritation: Give your body time to heal. Avoid any further sexual activity until you are sure that the bleeding has stopped and you feel comfortable.
2. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the vaginal area clean to prevent infection. Use mild soap and water for cleaning, and avoid douching or using scented products that could irritate the area.
3. Use Sanitary Products: As you mentioned using sanitary pads, continue to do so to manage any bleeding. This will also help you keep track of the amount and frequency of bleeding.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may arise, such as severe pain, fever, or an unusual odor from the vaginal area. These could indicate an infection or other complications.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the bleeding persists beyond a week, becomes heavier, or is accompanied by severe pain or other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination to rule out any serious issues, such as lacerations or infections.
6. Discuss Sexual Health: If you are feeling anxious about your sexual health or potential risks (such as sexually transmitted infections), consider discussing these concerns with a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance on safe practices and the importance of protection during sexual activities.
It's also worth noting that emotional responses to these experiences can be significant. Many individuals feel a mix of excitement and anxiety after their first sexual encounter. It's important to communicate openly with your partner about your feelings and any concerns you may have.
In summary, while some bleeding after first sexual intercourse can be normal, it's essential to monitor the situation and seek medical advice if the bleeding continues or if you experience any other concerning symptoms. Taking care of your sexual health and well-being is crucial, and don't hesitate to reach out for professional support if needed.
