Painful swelling of the bone in the left shoulder?

A few months ago, I suspected that the chain of my bag was causing friction and pressure on my left shoulder.
Later, I discovered that the bone in my left shoulder (the protruding bone extending from the left clavicle to the upper part of the left shoulder) would hurt if touched or pressed.
Gradually, it started to swell and hurt.
However, I didn't feel discomfort unless that specific area was pressed.
Until the day before yesterday, I found it difficult to lift my left arm, and I experienced pulling pain at certain angles.
I would like to ask the doctor what might be causing this.
Should I see an orthopedic specialist? Thank you.

Ching, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/05/24

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

You should see an orthopedic specialist for the acromioclavicular joint, which is the joint between the acromion and the clavicle.
Sometimes, this area can also experience pain.

More Info

Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing pain and swelling in your left shoulder, particularly around the area where the collarbone extends to the shoulder. This kind of pain can arise from several potential causes, especially considering your history of carrying a bag that may have caused friction or pressure on that area.

Possible Causes of Pain and Swelling
1. Soft Tissue Injury: The pain you are experiencing could be due to a soft tissue injury, such as a strain or sprain of the muscles or ligaments around the shoulder. This can occur from repetitive stress or direct pressure from carrying a heavy bag.

2. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between tissues, can lead to pain and swelling. Shoulder bursitis often causes pain when lifting the arm or moving it in certain directions.

3. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder, particularly the rotator cuff tendons, can cause pain and limit mobility. This is often exacerbated by repetitive overhead activities or pressure on the shoulder.

4. Acromioclavicular Joint Injury: The area where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade (the acromioclavicular joint) can become inflamed or injured, leading to pain, especially when pressure is applied.

5. Subacromial Impingement: This occurs when the rotator cuff tendons are compressed during shoulder movements, leading to pain and limited range of motion.

6. Osteoarthritis: Degenerative changes in the shoulder joint can lead to pain and swelling, particularly in older adults or those with a history of joint issues.

Recommendations
Given the symptoms you described, it would be advisable to consult an orthopedic specialist. They can perform a thorough physical examination and may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays or an MRI to assess the condition of your shoulder joint, soft tissues, and any potential injuries.

Treatment Options
1. Rest and Ice: Initially, resting the shoulder and applying ice can help reduce inflammation and pain.

2. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can guide you through exercises to strengthen the shoulder muscles, improve flexibility, and restore range of motion.

3. Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

4. Corticosteroid Injections: If conservative treatments are ineffective, corticosteroid injections may be considered to reduce inflammation.

5. Surgery: In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair damaged tissues or relieve impingement.

Conclusion
In summary, the pain and swelling in your left shoulder could be attributed to various causes, including soft tissue injuries, bursitis, tendinitis, or joint issues. It is essential to seek medical attention to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent further complications and promote a quicker recovery. Please do not hesitate to reach out to an orthopedic specialist for a comprehensive evaluation.
