Height Concerns: Can Stretching and Growth Hormones Help? - Orthopedics

Height issues

Hello, doctor.
I am 15 years old and will turn 16 in October.
My current height is only 171-173 cm.
My parents' heights are 175 cm and 153 cm.
I have relatively short calves.
I am overweight.
If I want to reach a height of about 178-182 cm and have longer legs, would stretching, swimming, or doing jumping exercises be helpful? Would taking calcium supplements or growth hormones be effective? Do you have any recommendations for growth hormones? Thank you!

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/05/29

Dr. Chen Bochen reply Orthopedics

1.
Growth hormone is effective for increasing height, but any growth hormone available on the market is counterfeit.
Never risk your health for it.
2.
In Taiwan, growth hormone can only be administered through a diagnosis and evaluation by a physician specializing in pediatric endocrinology or pediatric genetics and metabolism at a medical center or regional hospital (the standards are very strict), or through some private clinics that operate on the fringes of the law (not recommended, very expensive, and safety is not guaranteed).
3.
Currently, medically proven methods that are effective for increasing height include: A: Increasing sleep duration; you should sleep at least 8-10 hours a day for your age.
B: Avoid sugary drinks, reduce refined foods, and consume more whole foods.
4.
Theoretically helpful methods include: A: Increasing calcium and protein intake; drinking more milk can help.
B: Engaging in jumping, stretching, and exercise.

More Info

It's great that you're reaching out to understand more about your height concerns and the factors that can influence growth. At 15 years old, you are still in a critical period of growth, as most males continue to grow until around the age of 18 to 21. Your current height of 171-173 cm is within a normal range, especially considering your parents' heights.
To address your question about stretching, swimming, and jumping exercises: while these activities can promote overall fitness and flexibility, they do not directly influence height. Stretching can help improve posture, which may make you appear taller, but it won't change your actual height. Swimming is an excellent full-body workout that can enhance muscle tone and cardiovascular health, but it also does not have a direct impact on increasing height. Jumping exercises, like basketball or plyometrics, can strengthen your legs and improve your athletic performance, but again, they won't necessarily make you taller.

Regarding calcium supplements and growth hormones, it's essential to approach these with caution. Calcium is vital for bone health, and ensuring you have a balanced diet rich in calcium can support your overall growth. However, taking calcium supplements without a deficiency may not provide additional benefits.
As for growth hormones, they are typically prescribed for specific medical conditions, such as growth hormone deficiency. Using growth hormones without medical supervision can lead to serious side effects, including joint pain, insulin resistance, and increased risk of certain cancers. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before considering any hormone treatments.
Your height is influenced by various factors, including genetics, nutrition, and overall health. Since you mentioned being overweight, focusing on a balanced diet and regular exercise can help you achieve a healthier weight, which may positively impact your growth and overall well-being.
In conclusion, while you can engage in activities like swimming and stretching for overall health, they won't significantly increase your height. It's essential to maintain a balanced diet, possibly including calcium-rich foods, and to consult with a healthcare provider if you have concerns about growth hormones or other supplements. Remember, everyone's growth pattern is different, and it's important to embrace your unique journey.
