Can Old Bruises from a Motorcycle Accident Fade Away? - Surgery

The bruise from the car accident has not faded even after almost a year?

I injured my right calf last July when it was run over by a motorcycle, resulting in a large bruise.
The bruise has since diminished in size, but it feels like it has turned into a scar.
Is there any way to reduce or eliminate the scar? There is still a slight sensation in the bruised area, but it is not painful.

Hello! You can visit a general surgery department for an ultrasound to check for any residual hematoma.
I have encountered a case where a first-grade elementary school student was hit, and by fourth grade, the hematoma had not completely absorbed.
Generally, hematomas are allowed to resolve on their own.
If they do not absorb after a few weeks, a fine needle aspiration can be performed.
If absorption still does not occur, surgical debridement and drainage may be recommended.

Old bruises, particularly those resulting from trauma such as a motorcycle accident, can indeed fade over time. Bruises, or contusions, occur when small blood vessels under the skin break due to impact, leading to blood leaking into the surrounding tissues. Initially, bruises appear as dark purple or blue marks, but as the body heals, they typically change color, transitioning through shades of green, yellow, and brown before eventually fading away.

In your case, it sounds like the bruise you sustained on your right calf has significantly reduced in size since the incident in July. However, the presence of a scar or residual discoloration can occur, especially if the bruise was extensive or if there was damage to the skin or underlying tissues. Scarring can result from the healing process, where the body replaces damaged tissue with fibrous tissue, which may not have the same appearance or texture as the original skin.

To address your concerns about the remaining discoloration and the slight sensation you still feel in the area, here are some key points to consider:
1. Scar Treatment: If the area has developed into a scar, there are various treatments available that may help improve its appearance. Over-the-counter topical treatments containing ingredients like silicone gel, vitamin E, or hyaluronic acid can be beneficial. Additionally, professional treatments such as laser therapy, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels may be options to discuss with a dermatologist.

2. Massage and Moisturization: Gentle massage of the scarred area can help improve blood circulation and may aid in breaking down the fibrous tissue. Using a good moisturizer can also keep the skin supple, which may help in the healing process.

3. Sun Protection: Protecting the area from sun exposure is crucial, as UV rays can darken scars and make them more noticeable. Using sunscreen on the affected area can help prevent further discoloration.

4. Physical Therapy: If you experience any discomfort or limited mobility in the area, consulting with a physical therapist may be beneficial. They can provide exercises to strengthen the muscles around the scar and improve flexibility.

5. Time: It’s important to remember that scars can take time to mature and fade. The process can take several months to years, depending on various factors, including the severity of the original injury, your skin type, and overall health.

6. Consult a Professional: If you have concerns about the scar or if the area becomes painful, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can assess the area and recommend appropriate treatments based on your specific situation.

In summary, while old bruises can fade, the resulting scars may require additional care and treatment to improve their appearance. With time and appropriate measures, you may see further improvement in the appearance of the scarred area on your calf.
