I felt a small round lump below the areola?

Today, I accidentally pressed on my nipple and felt a slight pain, so I checked the area and found a small round lump just above the nipple and below the areola.
It feels smooth with well-defined borders, and there is a bit of pain when I press on it.
I would like to ask the doctor what this could be.
I have a history of gynecomastia and previously had a small fibrocystic lump detected in the lower part of the same breast.
I am a bit concerned, but I do not have a fever.

Some people, especially males, may feel some hard lumps beneath the nipple, and it is often on one side.
This is generally not a cause for concern.

When it comes to discovering a small lump below the nipple, particularly in the context of male gynecomastia and a previously identified fibrous cyst, it is understandable to feel concerned. The lump you described as small, round, and smooth with slight tenderness upon pressure could be indicative of several conditions, but it is essential to approach this situation with a clear understanding of potential causes and the appropriate steps to take.

Firstly, it is important to note that lumps in the breast area, even in males, can arise from various benign conditions. Given your history of gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of breast tissue in males, the lump could be related to this condition. Gynecomastia can sometimes present as a firm lump beneath the nipple, often due to hormonal imbalances that lead to an increase in breast tissue. This condition is generally benign, but it can cause discomfort and psychological distress.

The presence of a fibrous cyst, which you mentioned was previously identified, is another possibility. Fibrocystic changes in breast tissue can occur in both males and females and are characterized by the development of fluid-filled cysts or fibrous tissue. These cysts can sometimes become tender, especially if they are inflamed or if there has been any trauma to the area, such as the pressure you applied when you accidentally pressed on your nipple.

Other potential causes for a lump in this area could include:
1. Lipoma: A benign tumor made of fat tissue that can develop in various parts of the body, including the breast area.

2. Infection or Abscess: If there is localized pain and tenderness, it could indicate an infection, which may require medical evaluation and treatment.

3. Gynecomastia-related changes: As mentioned, hormonal changes can lead to the development of lumps in the breast tissue.

4. Other benign tumors: Such as adenomas, which are also non-cancerous growths.

Given that you are not experiencing systemic symptoms such as fever, which could indicate an infection, and considering your medical history, it is likely that the lump is benign. However, it is crucial to have any new or changing lumps evaluated by a healthcare professional. A thorough clinical examination, and possibly imaging studies such as an ultrasound, can help determine the nature of the lump and whether any further action is necessary.

In summary, while the lump you have described may be benign, particularly in the context of your existing conditions, it is always best to err on the side of caution. Scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider, preferably one who specializes in breast health or urology, would be a prudent step. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and, if necessary, recommend further diagnostic testing or treatment options. Remember, early evaluation and intervention are key to managing any potential concerns effectively.
