Unexplained fever for one night?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask you something.
My usual body temperature at work is around 36.1°C, but last night I suddenly had a fever with an ear temperature of 38.5°C.
Today, my temperature has been around 37.3°C.
I don't have any other symptoms, just mild diarrhea that started three days ago when my menstrual period began.
However, I don't go to the bathroom more than twice, and the stools are loose but not watery.
My family is very concerned that it might be COVID-19, but I have no travel history or exposure history.
I also don't want to go to the hospital at this time.
Could you please explain why I might have suddenly developed a fever? Should I go to the hospital for an examination?

Hello! Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing symptoms of an acute infection, so having a fever is a reasonable manifestation.
Typically, the fever may last for about three days and then gradually subside.
If your symptoms are improving, please continue to take preventive measures.
However, if there is no improvement in your symptoms, please seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

More Info
When experiencing an unexpected fever, especially when it deviates from your normal body temperature, it can be concerning. In your case, you mentioned that your usual temperature is around 36.1°C, but you suddenly developed a fever with an ear temperature of 38.5°C, which is a significant increase. Additionally, you have experienced mild diarrhea for the past three days, coinciding with your menstrual period, but you have not had any other symptoms.
Fever is a common physiological response to various conditions, primarily infections. It is the body's way of signaling that something is amiss, often due to an immune response to pathogens such as bacteria or viruses. In your case, while you do not have a travel history or known exposure to COVID-19, it is still essential to consider other potential causes of fever.
The mild diarrhea you are experiencing could be related to a gastrointestinal infection, which can sometimes accompany fever. Gastroenteritis, often caused by viral infections, can lead to symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. It is also worth noting that hormonal changes during menstruation can sometimes affect gastrointestinal function, leading to changes in bowel habits.
Given your symptoms, here are some considerations:
1. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your temperature and any other symptoms that may develop. If your fever persists for more than a couple of days or worsens, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
2. Hydration: Ensure you stay well-hydrated, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. Dehydration can occur quickly, particularly if you are losing fluids.
3. Rest: Your body needs energy to fight off whatever is causing the fever, so make sure to get plenty of rest.
4. Consider Over-the-Counter Medications: If your fever is uncomfortable, you may consider taking over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help reduce the fever and alleviate discomfort.
5. When to Seek Medical Help: If you experience any of the following, it is crucial to seek medical attention:
- Fever lasting more than three days
- Severe abdominal pain
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, dry mouth, or decreased urination)
- Any new or worsening symptoms
6. Testing for COVID-19: Given the ongoing concerns about COVID-19, if your fever persists or you develop additional symptoms (such as cough, loss of taste or smell, or difficulty breathing), consider getting tested for COVID-19, even without known exposure.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may not immediately suggest a severe condition, it is essential to remain vigilant. If your fever continues or you develop new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health is paramount, and healthcare professionals can provide the necessary evaluations and treatments to ensure your well-being.
