Epididymitis with induration?
I recently developed epididymitis, and although the epididymis is swollen, it is not hard.
After taking antibiotics for a few days, I noticed that the entire epididymis feels harder (not just locally).
Is this normal? (I took Pseudomonas aeruginosa tablets 400 mg.)

Hello: 1) It's not normal, but it is possible.
If there is no fever and no pain, you can finish the medication and return for a follow-up.
If there is fever or pain, you should return for a follow-up immediately.

The hardening of the epididymis after antibiotic treatment can be a concerning symptom, especially following an episode of epididymitis. Epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis, can be caused by infections, including bacterial infections that may require antibiotic treatment.
When antibiotics are prescribed, they are intended to target the bacteria causing the infection, and in many cases, they can effectively reduce inflammation and resolve the infection. However, the response to treatment can vary from person to person.
In your case, the hardening of the epididymis after a few days of antibiotic treatment could be due to several factors:
1. Resolution of Inflammation: As the infection resolves, the inflammatory process may lead to changes in the tissue structure, which could be perceived as hardening. This is often a part of the healing process.
2. Formation of Scar Tissue: If the inflammation was significant, it is possible that some scar tissue could form as the body heals. This can lead to a feeling of hardness in the epididymis.
3. Persistent Infection or Complications: If the antibiotic treatment is not effective against the specific bacteria causing the infection, or if there are complications such as an abscess, this could lead to ongoing symptoms, including hardness.
4. Medication Side Effects: Some medications can cause changes in tissue consistency, although this is less common with antibiotics.
It is important to monitor your symptoms closely. If the hardness persists, increases, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, fever, or swelling, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to perform a physical examination, and possibly imaging studies, to assess the situation further.
In terms of treatment, if the current antibiotic (in your case, Pseudomonas-specific antibiotics like the one you mentioned) does not seem to be effective, your doctor may consider switching to a different antibiotic based on culture results or clinical judgment.
In summary, while some changes in the epididymis can be expected after treatment, any significant changes, especially hardening, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out complications or the need for a change in treatment. Always consult your doctor for personalized medical advice, especially when it comes to ongoing symptoms after treatment.
