Is it possible to receive the HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) between the second and third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine?
Hello, I received the first dose of the HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) in mid-March this year, the second dose at the end of April, and I plan to receive the third dose in mid-September.
I would like to know if it is possible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the near future (between the second and third doses).
If not, how long after the third dose can I receive the COVID-19 vaccine? Thank you for your response!

Dr. Wu Xianghui reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
There is no required interval after receiving the HPV nine-valent vaccine before administering the COVID-19 vaccine (of any brand).
However, since each vaccine has associated side effects, it is recommended to wait two weeks before receiving another vaccine to differentiate which side effects are caused by which vaccine.

More Info
When considering the timing of COVID-19 vaccinations in relation to HPV vaccinations, it is essential to follow the guidelines provided by health authorities and medical professionals. Based on the information provided, you have received your first dose of the HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) in mid-March, the second dose at the end of April, and you plan to receive the third dose in mid-September. You are now inquiring about the possibility of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine between these HPV doses.
According to current medical guidelines, it is generally recommended that individuals do not receive multiple vaccines simultaneously. Specifically, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health organizations advise that if you are receiving a non-live vaccine, such as the COVID-19 vaccine, it is best to wait at least 14 days after receiving another vaccine before getting the COVID-19 vaccine. This recommendation is in place to ensure that any potential side effects can be attributed to a specific vaccine and to allow the immune system to respond effectively to each vaccine.
In your case, since you are planning to receive your third dose of the HPV vaccine in mid-September, it would be advisable to wait until after this dose to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. After receiving the third dose of the HPV vaccine, you should wait at least 14 days before getting the COVID-19 vaccine. This means that if you receive your third HPV dose in mid-September, you could potentially schedule your COVID-19 vaccine for early October, allowing for the recommended waiting period.
It is also important to consider the urgency of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, especially in light of the ongoing pandemic. If you have the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine sooner, and if the HPV vaccination schedule allows for it, you may want to prioritize the COVID-19 vaccine, particularly if you are in a high-risk category or if there are concerns about COVID-19 exposure in your community.
In summary, while it is technically possible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine between HPV doses, it is recommended to wait until after your third HPV dose to ensure optimal immune response and adherence to vaccination guidelines. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your health status and vaccination history.
Additionally, it is worth noting that both the HPV vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine are critical in preventing serious health issues. The HPV vaccine helps protect against certain types of cancers caused by the human papillomavirus, while the COVID-19 vaccine is essential in reducing the risk of severe illness from COVID-19. By following the recommended vaccination schedules and guidelines, you are taking important steps to safeguard your health.
