Is it still possible to be pregnant?

My menstrual cycle is usually quite regular, with a 31-day cycle.
My last period started on June 3rd, but I had unprotected intercourse with ejaculation on June 13th and June 21st.
I already experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms like lower back pain and breast tenderness.
However, after the sexual activity, I noticed some light bleeding, and my breasts feel swollen but are much softer than before.
I have lower back pain and slight discomfort in my lower abdomen, and my vaginal discharge has increased.
I took a pregnancy test on the morning of July 1st, and it showed only one line.
Does this mean there is no chance of being pregnant?

NN, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/01

Dr. Huang Zifei reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dear NN,
If your menstrual cycle is approximately 28 days, testing on July 1 was too early.
Please retest on July 8 for more accurate results.
If your menstrual cycle is irregular and you are late, please consult a gynecologist for further examination.

More Info

Determining whether you are pregnant can be a complex process, especially when you have a regular menstrual cycle and experience symptoms that may overlap with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the signs and the testing methods available to you.

Understanding Your Symptoms
You mentioned that your menstrual cycle is typically around 31 days, with your last period starting on June 3. You had unprotected intercourse on June 13 and June 21, which could potentially lead to pregnancy if ovulation occurred around that time. Symptoms such as lower back pain, breast tenderness, and increased vaginal discharge can indeed be associated with both PMS and early pregnancy.
However, the occurrence of light bleeding after intercourse could be a sign of several things, including hormonal changes, irritation, or even implantation bleeding if pregnancy occurred. It's important to note that not all women experience implantation bleeding, and its absence does not rule out pregnancy.

Pregnancy Testing
You performed a home pregnancy test on July 1, which returned a negative result (one line). Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when used correctly, especially if taken after a missed period. However, testing too early can lead to false negatives, as the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy, may not be at detectable levels yet.

Given that your period is expected around July 4 (31 days after June 3), testing on July 1 may have been slightly premature. If your period does not arrive by the expected date, it would be advisable to test again a few days later.

Recommendations
1. Wait for Your Period: If your period does not arrive by the expected date, consider retesting with a home pregnancy test. For the most accurate results, use the first morning urine, as it typically contains the highest concentration of hCG.

2. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If you continue to experience symptoms like breast tenderness, back pain, or unusual bleeding, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test, which is more sensitive than urine tests and can detect pregnancy earlier.

3. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

4. Consider Other Factors: Stress, hormonal imbalances, and other health issues can also affect your menstrual cycle and cause symptoms similar to those of pregnancy.

Conclusion
In summary, while your symptoms may suggest a possibility of pregnancy, the negative home pregnancy test indicates that you are likely not pregnant at this time. However, if your period does not arrive soon, retesting or consulting with a healthcare provider would be the next best steps. Remember, every woman's body is different, and factors such as stress and hormonal fluctuations can significantly impact your menstrual cycle and symptoms. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking professional advice when in doubt.
