Ear piercing
Hello, I am 19 years old.
I had my ears pierced when I was 15, but it became inflamed, possibly due to inadequate care and a metal allergy.
I later removed the earrings, and the holes healed.
Recently, I want to get my ears pierced again.
What should I pay attention to? How should I care for my piercings after getting them done? Also, where would be a good place to get my ears pierced? I live in Nantou.
These are my questions, thank you.

Dr. Chen Junliang reply Otolaryngology
Ms.
Leng Hsuan: If you are allergic to metals, it is advisable not to get your ears pierced.
If you insist on getting them pierced, it is best to find a place that practices thorough disinfection.
In the future, be sure to pay attention to the cleanliness and disinfection of your earrings.

When considering ear piercing, especially after a previous experience with infection and metal allergies, it's essential to approach the process with caution and informed decision-making. Here are some essential tips for safe ear piercing and aftercare, particularly relevant to your situation in Taiwan.
Choosing the Right Location for Piercing
1. Professional Piercing Studios: Opt for a reputable piercing studio rather than a mall kiosk or unlicensed practitioner. Look for establishments that prioritize hygiene and have certified piercers. You can check reviews online or ask for recommendations from friends.
2. Hygiene Standards: Ensure that the studio follows strict hygiene protocols. This includes using sterilized equipment, wearing gloves, and having a clean environment. The piercer should also explain their procedures and the aftercare process.
3. Material Selection: Since you have a history of metal allergies, it’s crucial to choose hypoallergenic materials for your earrings. Surgical stainless steel, titanium, or 14k gold are excellent options. Avoid nickel, as it is a common allergen.
The Piercing Process
1. Consultation: Before getting pierced, have a consultation with the piercer. Discuss your previous experience with infections and allergies. They can provide tailored advice and might suggest alternative methods, such as using a needle instead of a piercing gun, which is generally considered safer and less traumatic to the tissue.
2. Aftercare Instructions: Make sure to get clear aftercare instructions from the piercer. They should provide you with written guidelines to follow.
Aftercare Tips
1. Keep It Clean: Clean the area around the piercing with saline solution or a mild antiseptic recommended by your piercer. Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as these can irritate the skin and delay healing.
2. Avoid Touching: Try not to touch your new piercing with dirty hands. If you need to adjust your earrings, ensure your hands are clean.
3. Avoid Swimming: For at least 6 weeks post-piercing, avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water to reduce the risk of infection.
4. Monitor for Infection: Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
5. Earring Care: Initially, wear the earrings provided by the piercer. Avoid changing them for at least 6-8 weeks to allow the piercing to heal properly. When you do change them, opt for hypoallergenic materials.
6. Avoid Heavy Earrings: In the initial healing phase, avoid wearing heavy earrings that can pull on the piercing and cause irritation.
Additional Considerations
- Follow-Up: If you experience any unusual symptoms or if the piercing does not seem to be healing properly, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can assess the situation and provide appropriate treatment if necessary.
- Patience is Key: Healing times can vary, but generally, ear piercings take about 6-8 weeks to heal. During this time, be diligent with your aftercare routine.
In summary, by choosing a reputable piercing studio, selecting hypoallergenic materials, and following proper aftercare, you can significantly reduce the risk of complications and enjoy your new earrings safely. Always listen to your body and consult professionals if you have any concerns.
