How to care for ear piercings?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about how to care for my ear piercings.
I have had them for less than a month.
I know I need to dry them after showering, but how should I apply medication? Should I remove the earrings? I'm worried that if I take them out, I might damage the new skin when trying to put them back in.
If I don't take them out, it's hard to apply the medication.
What would be the best approach? Also, what type of medication should I use?

Zheng, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/01/17

Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology

Hello: Please avoid contact with water before the wound has healed.
After disinfecting with Betadine, keep it dry.
If the wound shows signs of redness, swelling, pain, or discharge, please consult a dermatologist for treatment.
Sincerely, Dr.

Caring for new ear piercings is crucial to ensure proper healing and to prevent infections. Here are some essential tips and advice on how to care for your new ear piercings effectively.

1. Keep It Clean
- Cleaning Solution: Use a saline solution or a saline wound wash, which is typically available at pharmacies. You can also make a saline solution at home by mixing 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt in 8 ounces of warm distilled water.

- Frequency: Clean the piercing twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening. Use a clean cotton ball or gauze pad to apply the solution gently to the area around the piercing.

2. Avoid Touching
- Hands Off: Avoid touching your new piercing with unwashed hands. This can introduce bacteria and lead to infections.

- Jewelry Handling: Do not twist or turn the jewelry unnecessarily. This can irritate the piercing and delay healing.

3. Moisture Management
- Drying: After showering or bathing, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Avoid using a hairdryer directly on the piercing, as this can cause irritation.

- Avoid Submerging: Try to avoid submerging your new piercing in water (like swimming pools, hot tubs, or lakes) until it is fully healed, which can take several weeks to months.

4. Medication Application
- Topical Treatments: If your piercer recommends a topical antibiotic ointment, apply it sparingly. You can use a cotton swab to apply the ointment without removing the jewelry.

- Avoid Removal: Do not remove the jewelry during the healing process unless advised by a professional. Removing it can cause the hole to close up, making it difficult to reinsert.

5. Monitor for Signs of Infection
- Symptoms: Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green. If you notice these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional.

- Pain Management: Mild discomfort is normal, but if you experience severe pain, it may indicate an issue that needs medical attention.

6. Choose the Right Jewelry
- Material: Ensure that the jewelry is made of hypoallergenic materials, such as surgical stainless steel, titanium, or gold. This helps reduce the risk of allergic reactions and irritation.

- Size and Style: Avoid heavy earrings or those that can easily get caught on clothing or hair, as this can cause trauma to the piercing.

7. Patience is Key
- Healing Time: Understand that healing can take time. Cartilage piercings, for example, may take longer to heal than lobe piercings. Be patient and consistent with your care routine.

8. Consult a Professional
- Follow-Up: If you have any concerns about your piercing or if it does not seem to be healing properly, do not hesitate to reach out to your piercer or a healthcare provider for advice.

In summary, caring for new ear piercings involves maintaining cleanliness, avoiding unnecessary handling, and monitoring for signs of infection. By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your new piercings heal properly and remain healthy. Remember, if you have any doubts or concerns, consulting with a professional is always the best course of action.
