Annoying acne?
Hello Dr.
Jiang, I usually don't have much trouble with acne, with no more than five pimples on my face at a time.
Recently, I had a gastrointestinal flu and saw a doctor who prescribed medication and advised me to eat lighter foods.
After three days, thinking I had recovered, I went out for steak with my husband.
However, as soon as I got home, I felt very uncomfortable in my stomach, and my cheeks became extremely itchy.
The next day, my cheeks were swollen, and two days later, the swollen areas developed into small red pimples.
The nightmare didn't end there; the following day, all the pimples had a small white pus on top.
I felt like I was about to faint...
it was as if all the acne I had ever had since childhood had gathered together.
During this time, I visited two different hospitals and received different diagnoses: one said it was a drug allergy, while the other suggested it was due to hormonal imbalance.
Could you please help me determine the cause of my condition? Also, could you recommend another hospital for me?

Acne is rarely sudden; if it occurs suddenly, it may be associated with other bacterial infections.
It is advisable to seek treatment from a dermatology department at a top medical center.
Wishing you good health.

Acne is a common skin condition that can arise from various factors, including hormonal changes, dietary choices, stress, and even medication. In your case, it appears that a combination of factors may have contributed to the sudden outbreak of acne after your gastrointestinal illness and subsequent dietary indiscretion.
Firstly, let's address the potential causes of your acne flare-up. After experiencing a gastrointestinal illness, your body may have been in a state of stress, which can lead to hormonal fluctuations. Hormones, particularly androgens, can increase oil production in the skin, leading to clogged pores and acne. Additionally, consuming rich or heavy foods like steak after a period of eating bland foods can also trigger digestive issues, which may indirectly affect your skin.
The itching and swelling on your cheeks, followed by the development of red bumps and pustules, could indicate an allergic reaction or an inflammatory response. If one doctor suggested a drug allergy, it’s essential to consider any new medications you may have taken during your illness. On the other hand, the second opinion regarding hormonal imbalance is also valid, as hormonal fluctuations can lead to increased acne, especially in women.
To manage your current skin issues, here are some recommendations:
1. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from harsh skincare products, including those with alcohol or strong fragrances, as they can exacerbate irritation. Opt for gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizers and cleansers.
2. Topical Treatments: Consider using over-the-counter topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which can help reduce inflammation and clear clogged pores. However, be cautious with the use of retinoids (like A-acid) if your skin is currently inflamed, as they can cause further irritation.
3. Dietary Considerations: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while avoiding excessive dairy and high-glycemic foods, which can contribute to acne flare-ups.
4. Consult a Dermatologist: Since you have received conflicting opinions from different healthcare providers, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist who specializes in acne and skin disorders. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and may suggest treatments such as hormonal therapy, antibiotics, or even isotretinoin if necessary.
5. Patch Testing: If you suspect an allergic reaction, consider undergoing patch testing to identify any specific allergens that may be contributing to your skin issues.
6. Stress Management: Engage in stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise, as stress can worsen acne.
In conclusion, your acne outbreak may be multifactorial, involving dietary choices, hormonal changes, and possibly an allergic reaction. A thorough evaluation by a dermatologist can help pinpoint the exact cause and guide you toward effective treatment options. Remember, patience is key, as it may take time to see improvement in your skin condition.
