Bartholin's gland cyst
Hello doctor, I am a high school student.
Recently, I have noticed redness and swelling on the upper part of my right labium, and it hurts when touched or rubbed.
It feels hard to the touch, but I'm not sure if it is a Bartholin's gland cyst.
I have researched online, but it doesn't seem to match.
Most information I found is about cysts located near the vaginal opening at the lower edge of the labia, while mine is located above, near the clitoris.
Could this be a Bartholin's gland cyst?

Hello, based on your symptom description, it is possible that you have folliculitis.
I recommend maintaining cleanliness and dryness in the perineal area, avoiding tight clothing, using fewer panty liners, ensuring adequate sleep, and following a light diet.
Additionally, try to avoid stress and prolonged sitting.
You may soak in a bath to alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist or worsen, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
Bartholin's cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the Bartholin glands, which are located on either side of the vaginal opening. These glands are responsible for producing lubrication during sexual arousal. When the duct of a Bartholin gland becomes blocked, fluid can accumulate, leading to the formation of a cyst.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing redness, swelling, and pain in the area above your right labia, which is indeed a concern. While Bartholin's cysts typically occur near the vaginal opening, they can sometimes develop in other areas, including the upper labia. The symptoms you describe—pain upon touch and a hard feeling—could potentially indicate a Bartholin's cyst, but it is essential to consider other possibilities as well.
Other conditions that could cause similar symptoms include:
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the genital area and may cause redness, swelling, and tenderness.
2. Abscess: An abscess is a collection of pus that can form due to infection. It may present with similar symptoms, including pain and swelling.
3. Other cysts or growths: There are various types of cysts or benign growths that can occur in the genital area, and they may not necessarily be Bartholin's cysts.
Given your age and the symptoms you are experiencing, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. A doctor can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to determine the nature of the lump.
Here are some important considerations regarding Bartholin's cysts and similar conditions:
- Symptoms: Bartholin's cysts may be asymptomatic or cause discomfort, especially if they become infected. Signs of infection can include increased pain, redness, swelling, and possibly fever.
- Treatment: If the cyst is not causing significant discomfort, it may not require treatment. However, if it becomes painful or infected, treatment options may include warm compresses, drainage of the cyst, or antibiotics if an infection is present.
- Self-Care: While waiting for a medical appointment, you can apply warm compresses to the area to help alleviate discomfort. Avoid tight clothing that may irritate the area, and maintain good hygiene.
- When to Seek Help: If you experience severe pain, fever, or if the swelling increases, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while your symptoms could suggest a Bartholin's cyst, it is important to have a healthcare provider evaluate your condition to rule out other potential issues and provide appropriate care. Don't hesitate to reach out to a trusted adult or healthcare professional for support and guidance. Your health and well-being are paramount, and getting a proper diagnosis will help you address any concerns effectively.
