Rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and hiccups?
Hello, I have had gastrointestinal issues since childhood, and I often burp after eating.
Last week, I started experiencing dizziness, and this week I noticed an increased heart rate (90 when lying down and over 100 when standing).
I also have symptoms of burping after drinking water and eating, but I do not have chest pain or tightness.
Could this be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)? Thank you.

Fast heartbeat, dizziness, and hiccups can indeed be concerning symptoms, and it's understandable that you're seeking clarity on whether these issues could be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While GERD primarily affects the digestive system, it can sometimes manifest with symptoms that might seem unrelated at first glance.
GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, leading to irritation and discomfort. Common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing. However, some individuals may experience atypical symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), dizziness, and even hiccups.
In your case, the rapid heartbeat you describe—90 beats per minute while lying down and exceeding 100 beats per minute when standing—could be indicative of several factors. One possibility is that the rapid heartbeat is a physiological response to anxiety or discomfort, which can be heightened by digestive issues. When the body is under stress, whether from physical discomfort or anxiety, the heart rate can increase as part of the "fight or flight" response.
Dizziness can also be linked to several conditions, including dehydration, low blood pressure, or even anxiety. If your digestive issues are causing you to eat less or feel uncomfortable, this could lead to dehydration or a drop in blood pressure, both of which can contribute to feelings of dizziness.
Hiccups are generally benign but can be triggered by various factors, including eating too quickly, consuming carbonated beverages, or even stress. If you find that your hiccups are persistent and accompanied by other symptoms, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
While GERD can cause some of the symptoms you're experiencing, it's essential to consider other potential causes as well. For instance, conditions such as anxiety disorders, cardiac issues, or even thyroid dysfunction can lead to similar symptoms. Given your history of gastrointestinal discomfort and the recent onset of dizziness and rapid heartbeat, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess your heart's rhythm and function, as well as tests to evaluate your gastrointestinal health.
In summary, while GERD could be a contributing factor to your symptoms, it is crucial to explore other potential causes, especially considering the rapid heartbeat and dizziness. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider will help determine the underlying issues and guide appropriate treatment. In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when your symptoms occur, what you were doing at the time, and any dietary factors that may be involved. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing and managing your condition effectively.
