When will menstruation return after a uterine polyp removal?

Due to my issues with uterine polyps, I underwent a polypectomy on July 2nd.
As of now, I have not yet had my menstrual period.
I would like to ask the doctor if the removal of the polyps will affect my menstrual cycle.
My menstrual periods have never been very regular, so I would like to know approximately how many days it will take for my period to return after the polypectomy.
Additionally, how long after the procedure should I schedule a follow-up appointment? Thank you.
My menstrual history from the past few months is as follows: June 16 to June 22; May 19 to May 28; April 23 to May 2; February 28 to March 10.

Xiao Hui, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/22

Dear Xiao-Hui,
After the uterine polyp surgery, it is possible for your menstrual period to be irregular for 1 to 3 months due to the impact on the endometrium.
Following that, your menstrual cycle may still be irregular as it is influenced by hormonal regulation.
Typically, you will have a follow-up appointment about a week after the polyp removal to discuss the pathology report.
Please consult with your obstetrician-gynecologist regarding the irregularities in your menstrual cycle.
Sincerely,
Dr.

After undergoing a uterine polyp removal on July 2, it's understandable to be concerned about the timing of your menstrual cycle, especially if your periods have been irregular in the past. The removal of uterine polyps can indeed have an impact on your menstrual cycle, but the extent of this impact can vary from person to person.

Typically, after a surgical procedure like polyp removal, many women may experience a delay in their menstrual cycle. This delay can be due to several factors, including hormonal changes, the body's healing process, and the stress associated with surgery. In general, it is not uncommon for menstruation to take a few weeks to return after such a procedure. Some women may find that their period returns within 4 to 6 weeks post-surgery, while others may take longer, especially if their cycles were already irregular prior to the procedure.

Given your history of irregular menstrual cycles, it may be difficult to predict exactly when your period will return. Your previous cycle dates indicate a pattern of irregularity, with cycles ranging from about 26 to 30 days, but with varying lengths of menstruation. This irregularity can complicate the timeline for when to expect your next period after the surgery.

As for follow-up appointments, it is generally recommended to have a follow-up consultation with your healthcare provider about 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery. This allows your doctor to assess your recovery and check for any complications, such as excessive bleeding or infection. During this visit, you can also discuss any concerns regarding your menstrual cycle and whether any further evaluation or treatment might be necessary.

If you do not experience your period within 6 weeks post-surgery, or if you have any unusual symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection (like fever or unusual discharge), it is important to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may want to perform an ultrasound or other tests to ensure that everything is healing properly and that there are no remaining polyps or other issues affecting your menstrual cycle.

In summary, while it is common for menstruation to be delayed after uterine polyp removal, the exact timing can vary based on individual circumstances. Given your history of irregular cycles, it may take some time for your body to adjust post-surgery. Keep track of any changes and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure the best care for your reproductive health.
